Is This Snare Worth $140? Last viewed: 7 hours ago

Hello everyone,

I have an opportunity to buy a 70s Supraphonic that is pictured below (sorry this the only picture that I have at this point). The seller wants $140 for it. Should I jump on it assuming the strainer and such are intact and original? Would this be a steel shell snare or something different?

Thanks!

that's a decent price. I would jump on it. It would be an aluminum shell. The big thing to look for is pitting or flaking of the chrome on the shell. That is a common issue with these drums.

O yeah I'd say $140 is fair.

Absolutely. This drum sells close to $300 on ebay. It looks to be in good condition, I can't see any major pitting in the picture. The name engraved on the batter side hoop is a bit of a flaw, but that's not a huge deal. Absolutely worth $140 and a great sounding drum.

I paid 175.00 for mine in similar condition. Yours looks a little better but it will look great once polished. Get it and buy some Simichrome chrome polish. You can get it on eBay if you can't find it locally. Take your drum apart and polish the lugs separately from the shell. Be careful if you have large pits as they may flake if you apply heavy pressure while polishing. Aside from Ludwig's chrome issues with these drums, they really are truly awesome snare drums. I think it's one of the best snare drums ever made and everyone should own one who is a serious drummer and or collector. As with a lot of legendary designs it is its simplicity that makes this classic truly a joy to play.

Thanks for giving me the "green light"! I figured it was a decent deal, just needed some reassurance.
