Is this THE "Ringo hi hat? Last viewed: 9 hours ago

I bought on ebay a Ludwig, flat base, WFL footboard, rubber tips on legs Ludwig 1121. It has the rubber cup cymbal seat without the adjusting screw, and no Ludwig logo.

The seller has "refurbished" it to the extent of polishing the footboard -- and left some polish residue. The base MAY have been painted, but not recently.

So when I took it apart, the mechanicals and spring had ALL the "vintage" gunk on them. Nothing at all against the guy, but I think refurbishing means doing the whole thing...

I plan to re-do the whole thing...because mechanically, these things are pretty cool, and they work really well. The to rod is a little chewed up, but I have a virgin one on hand I bought from Jim Petty (thanks Jim!!)

So... I intend to re-sell it to finance other restoration projects (or at least recover my dough!).

So the question: is this the hi hat model that came with Ringo's first Ludwig kit??

Not very important to me personally, but if I do sell it, I know the Ringo thing is very important to some collectors.

What do you think?

Thanks...

Oh, yeah...I also recently bought an NOS right-out-of-the-box 1123 that really IS NOS. It's beautiful.

I read that Mr. R. used the Spur Lok 1123 with his 2d Ludwig kit.

But mine is the tripod base, not flat based...so I think that means it ain't the Ringo thing.

Which is fine with me. I actually bought it for personal use.

I do a lot of restoration work on Ludwig hardware these days, and plan to keep one of the pieces for myself.

The bad news there is that it has now grown to include Slingerland pedals and hi hat, and Swivomatic one piece footboards... and Gretsch Floating Actions.

Good grief!

So do you think the tripod 1123 is a "Ringo" piece?

Thanks!

ringo did use a flat based 1121 early on. not many people seem to know about it or discuss it though. he used the flat based 1123 spurlock stand for years. that is what is commonly called the ringo stand and brings the bucks. i dont know that he ever used an 1123-1(non flat based spurlock). they are nice pedals however.

Thanks, Mike -- Judging by the way the bidding went on the one I bought, I think some folks are hip to it.

Incidentally, those ARE adjustable for tension. It requires a little disassembly, but it's not hard. I'll post some pics.

The 1123, though, aren't adjustable...at least I haven't seen a way.

The NOS one I bought is for my personal, well... I guess I now have to say "collection!"

i have a small collection too! i love these stands. there is one stand that i am missing though. for a short period in the early 60's, there was a wfl 1121 hi hat stand that had the regular slip on rubber feet. it usually came with an adjustable bottom hat tilter like the 1123 came with. the earlier model 1121's had the flat button feet and no tilter. the bottom hi hats cups are interchangeable between the 1121 and 1123 stand.

Thanks, Matt...that's helpful.

The WFL I have is the kind with the rubber feet on the legs...the legs don't have the "twist" that the pad is riveted to.

I THOUGHT that that was the hi hat the R got with his 1st Ludwig kit, and the Spur Lok came with set #2.

I recently sold one with the pads, and asked some of these same questions. My recollection is that the one I have came with set #1. I'm asking again be "my recollection" ain't too hot these days!!
