Actually, these photos are from the earlier EBay listing where the drum sold for $5100. Does anybody out there have the written description for the earlier auction? Not sure if the earlier auction was legit (someone actually put in a winning bid of $5100, or the seller had a third party bid on the drum because he/she changed their mind on selling it), OR this new listing is a total fake. I mean, why would someone who initially paid $5100 for the drum try to sell it off for $1700?

Exactly... bingo!
If that was a real ad I'd get on a plane to Indianapolis and buy that drum tomorrow!
Okay, so I found the original 5/12 Ebay listing for the bass drum which reads:
"I've got a 1960's Gretsch jazz drum set that I'm parting out: This auction is for the kick drum. The drum head measures 18", & the shell depth is 14". All of the original claws & T-rods are present. There are no legs available with this set. There are two rods sticking out from the top that will be included. Heads are old, & front appears to be original. There is a really cool dampening system for the batter head. It is functioning properly. The sparkle wrap is complete & tight on the shell & in very nice vintage condition. There is slight lifting at the seams, as seen in picture #8. Both original hoops are included, one is missing the sparkle glitter wrap. This auction includes only what is described & pictured. If you don't see it, it isn't here. I don't know the official name for this color wrap. I will be happy to add any pertinent information that other folks are willing to share."
Here's what I know about this drum:
I work at a small town music store in the Minneapolis MN area. About a month ago a guitar player (let's call him Max) I had met about 20 years ago stopped in out of the blue just to have a look around. He does some guitar collecting and is a self proclaimed "picker" who does a fair amount of buying or selling on ebay. We had a Rogers snare and a Gretsch snare on the shelf that he took a look at because even though he's a guitar player he does some drum buying and selling. He said "I'm really a Slingerland guy, but since you have a Gretsch snare here I have to tell you my Gretsch story!"
Back in April of 2012 Max went to take a look at an old guitar. The seller of the guitar said that he also had an old drum set he'd be willing to sell. Max is not a vintage drum expert, but he could tell it was a Gretsch kit, so he knew it would attract some interest. He bought the kit. After doing some research he figured he had something pretty special - and valuable. The kit he bought had an 18" (missing) round badge bass drum, and 12" and 14" SSB toms. He didn't want to bother trying to sell it on craiglist because he knew he'd get the most for it on ebay. He also felt that since the toms and bass drum had different badges it was okay to break up the set.
It was about this time that I figured out that Max was the ebay seller who had gotten $5100 for his bass drum. The sale was good, and he got paid. (He sold the toms in separate auctions.) After he told me his story, I went back and found the ebay listing, then posted about it at DFO. I read about this thread at DFO, so here I am.
If there is anything shady about this latest attempt to sell the drum (and it wouldn't surprise me if there was), I don't believe it has anything to do with Max, the ebay seller. He sold the drum on ebay, got paid and is done with it as of last May. The OLX seller in Indianapolis has lifted the original ebay listing, photos and all, so like a lot of you here I would be surprised if this is anything but a scam.
