Jazz drums...vintage Gretsch or Ludwig Last viewed: 4 seconds ago

From thornbeck

If you have the opportunity to try a Gretsch, do it. Round Badge or Early Stop Sign Badge will produce that "Great Gretsch Sound" everyone raves about. My 14 year old son was bitten by the Gretsch Bug. He loves the sound, especially the bass drum. He'd rather play his 12/14/20 Gretsch kit than his 12/13/16/22 Pearl kit. Of course he may have had a litlle persuasion. ;)So many factors involved in that "jazz" sound. Shell plys, shell size, heads, and tuning. Just buy more kits. I like Mikey's solution. Cool Dude- Tim

Thanks for good advice, Tim. I will at least try to get to test some Gretsches. Life is too short not too, really.

Rogers! But seriously, I don't think you can go wrong with any of the American made kits from the big 4.

Silver sparkle! These were in nice condition, but they were not cheap. It's okay because I've been wanting this setup with this specific finish! I can't wait!

Congrats! on the kit. I have a '59 Gretsch 20,12,14 and a 60's Ludwig Standard, same sizes, I love them both and gig more with the Ludwig, mainly because it cost less if something should happen. When I record I like the sound of the Gretsch. The Ludwigs have a brighter more open sound but they're both great, tough choice if I had to pick one.

1958 Gretsch Kit
1966 Kent Kit
1969 Ludwig Standard Kit
1970 Rogers Power Tone Kit
1970's Ludwig Vistalite Kit
1994 Yamaha Maple Custom
2010 Yamaha Maple Custom
28 assorted snares (including some real crap)
and 1 really nice K Zildjian Istanbul

They're all nice kits.

I forget who said it, "Play the drum, don't let the drum play you."

or something to that effect.

It's not the kit that makes it a jazz kit, it's the player.

You can play jazz on any drum kit, it's all in your delivery.

I've seen and heard guys whip up a kit with quads as toms, a 32" BD and a field snare and play jazz on it and it was great.
