J.G. Richards Snare Drum Last viewed: 2 hours ago

I have a J.G. Richards Snare Drum that i'm trying to restore and I'm wondering if anyone has the same snare with the original snare wires attached? I'm trying to figure out what type of snares it originally had. Any help would be appreciated, there seems to be very little about this drum company out there.

Wow! That is quite a shell! Is it solid or laminated? I was also wondering if it was exactly 14" dia. or an odd size?

Looks like a carousel snare! The caliope's sometimes have a bass drum and a snare as a part of the music making mechanism. Looks like one of those.

Too many great drums to list here!

Thanks for the responses! Dave, I believe it's a solid shell and it is 14" diameter.

John, it might be a carousel snare, very possible. I have the matching 26" Bass Drum too. They don't show any signs of being outdoors and I don't know if JG Richards supplied any band organ companies. I will look into that.

J.G. Richards was a distributor/reseller located in Cleveland, Ohio. Your drum was probably made by one of the big manufacturers during it's time period. Look at the lugs and try to find a match in the old catalogs. As far as snares, I'm going to guess they were made from gut.

Here's a thread I also started on J.G. Richards: http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=26833

That snare is a tank!
