Hey guys I finally took a stab at writing my first vintage drum article and George Lawrence was gracious enough to publish it in NSMD. I was able to track down the whereabouts of the only known surviving piece of John Densmore's Mod Orange set and was able to see the drum in person. Here is my story for all that is interested....

Interesting read, now find out what happened to his Gretsch set!
The last time I ever saw any pics of the Gretsch set was from the studio sessions for Waiting for the Sun. John was touring the Mod Orange set leaving the Gretsch for studio work. Sometime in mid 1968 John purchased a WMP downbeat that he took to Europe for the shows over there. The soft Parade album took a long time to record pics and video of the studio reveal that John was using the Mod Orange in the studio.
I believe the Gretsch set was the set John used in high school. It sounds like it was retired in 1968 by John and I have never heard a word about it since.
I'm only a paragraph in and you mention follwing your high school team around the state. What high school did you go to? Any chance it was in Texas? I'm a big Texas high school football junkie.
Currently looking for a 3-ply 24x14 Ludwig in champagne sparkle w/rail consolette and cymbal mount!
Excellent article Kurt. Thank you very much for bringing it to our attention. Can I assume for the dating of that set that it was not used on Light My Fire?
Great article, man! Really, really cool premise and I loved the story.

Great job, Kurt! As a fan of The Doors, John Densmore, Ludwig drums, and a big fan of Mod Orange, many thanks for an interesting article on a drum set that I hear in my head all the time.

I am from NH. We may have dominated high school football in our area back in the late 80's but make no mistake, I doubt we would have held a candle to some of those Texas football teams. You guys play some serious football down there!
