Thank you everybody for such a warm welcome! It's great to see people from all over the globe here and more importantly your passion for vintage drums.
Whilst I have been playing for over 30 years the "vintage" interest is something of a new thing for me. I've seen and played a lot of vintage drums but ownership has always been a mile off. Disillusioned with modern drums and their lack of romance, I find myself captivated by older instruments, their history, owners and the relationship between these old, fine instruments and the music played on them.
You might be interested to know that I was born in the shadow of the Boosey & Hawkes / Ajax / Edgware factory...Edgware General Hospital to be precise. The revisionist in me would love to cite this as the starting point of my interest in drums but the reality was my father nurtured my interest in music, bought me a kit in 1981 and I haven't looked back since.
Again thanks for the warm welcome and we'll get down to the nuts and bolts soon.
Cheers!
Al
Welcome Al to the community. Lots of experts and specialists here to answer any questions. Let us know what you have and post some pics. What part of London you from? In 1979, I was working in the Kensington Palace Hotel on High Street and lived near Holland Park. I remember the great music and used record shops there.
1979 eh? The streets were alive with the sound of The Police, The Specials, Reggae, New Wave, the New Wave of British Heavy Metal... I was only 5 at the time but I remember the music culture clearly. Two years later my drumming journey would start.
I'm not sure if they were there at the time but down the road from Holland Park (Notting Hill Gate) there are several used record shops. I spend many Sunday afternoons in them! How funny.
You're getting me all nostalgic for the late 70's :-)
Welcome!
