junior drum question Last viewed: 1 hour ago

I have looked at perhaps , 10 sets of junior drums , over the years and found most of them lacking in so many ways , that it seems a beginning small drummer , would be better off with an adapted , smaller full size kit. Unfortunately , not everyone can afford a Sonor Jungle kit or a Kings kit for a 5 year old.

I own one kit, which at first looks pretty poor----there is no head tensioning and it goes together with a bunch of clips but on closer examination it is a purposeful kit, designed to do the job with minimal fuss , stay tuned and playable. It's a Remo Quadura, PTS kit. 16 x10, 10x6 1/2, 12 x 10.( I could put a small snare with it) The hardware is cast and reasonably durable. The pre-tuning, o.k. and they are made in the U.S.A.

Does anyone out there have any experience with these and comparatively, how would they be for a very young beginner, compared to a another more conventional small kit.

Very familiar with them. They're extremely lightweight and sound decent. The pre-tuned heads sound and play good. The only issue I can think of might be in the durability of the clip fasteners attaching the heads. I used to see many of these PTS kits but haven't seen or heard of them lately. I believe most didn't stand up to wear and tear. The individual PTS heads were also used in the manufacturing of the first shell-less portable kits. I currently own one of the newer PDP starter kits in miniature sizes, but while its overall standard of manufacturing is good, it falls way short in a lot of ways. You've certainly got nothing to lose with the PTS kit. It certainly can get children started out playing without subjecting them to the issues of tensioning, hardware, weight and mobility.

Thanks; BB . There is one clip fastener missing on the bottom of the floor tom but due to the pre-tuned heads, it doesn't seem to affect it negatively.

I guess I'll fix everything up and pass it on. I know someone looking for their kid. At that early an age, it doesn't make sense to impose the complexities of tuning etc.. They can learn that in time. Perhaps , when they grow up there will be robot drumtechs, or self tuning drumheads.

I just need to find a little snare drum, to go with them.

I think a Ludwig Breakbeats kit would be an awesome way to go for a beginners kit. http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=37585
