just bought a mysterious snare! help me ID it! Last viewed: 5 hours ago

The wife and I were just at an antique store- there were a few older acoustic guitars like usual.

Today there was a snare drum! I couldn't let it stay behind. It does look old but I don't know.

A magnet doesn't stick to it. At one point it was chrome but its cruddy right now. I've gotta polish it. It has weird "snares" on it. They look like little metal cords....? 8 lugs. This thing feels kinda heavy for aluminum. It weighs 7 pounds exactly. There is no badge.

There are no marchings on it. Just a Remo bottom head.

I need help IDing it! Please!

Here's the catch- my digital camera is out of commision! For right now I can only take pics with my Blackberry and email the pics to you. Yeah- horrible I know. If you can help me out, PM me your address and you can post the pics. Photobucket doesn't work on my Blackberry browser, boo.

Oh! I just saw that it says Slingerland on the throw arm. (Whatever its called! I'm a guitar player, not a drummer!)

I think you may have a Slingerland Professional Model. Nickel-plated brass shell. Comparing the three-point strainer against the ones on DrCJW's timeline, I'd guess roughly 1938-1941. Lots of Slingerland catalog pages have been scanned and posted on the Vintage Drum Guide, and HERE is a scan from the 1940 catalog showing a drum similar to yours.

As for the snares, they're wire-wound silk.

Those drums sound amazing.If you are considering cleaning or restoration ,remember do NOT use steelwool,and nickle plating is not as resilient as chrome and is generally thinner and not as hard.Nice find,good luck.

Unfortunately I'm gonna sell the drum. I've gotta take my dog to the vet and make sure he doesn't lose his eye sight. :(

I not gonna clean the drum up- I'll let the buyer do that. I've never cleaned a drum up and i DON'T wanna ruin anything.

You know what that sounds like a great idea!! Looking in Antique stores for Drums, I forgot how much fun it was!! I Picked uo some slingerland concert toms about 10 years back and they sound incredible!! Thanks Again for the Idea!!

Yeah man! I had a ball looking at old acoustic guitars! Even though they were old and beat up.....and even kinda junky I loved it! I kept my eyes peels for any drum related items.

I have looked in/called antique shops for YEARS......never much luck.....

They would have mandolins,ukes,harmonicas,mandocellos,banjos,violas,oboes,......

well,you get the idea..........

NO DRUMS in other words............

Got lucky 1 time...........calling shops in Waterloo,Iowa..............

Store had a Ludwig 1920's Ludwigold snare and bass with painted cabin scene for $200!

Only problem,I had to send the lady a custom made cardboard box to ship the 28" BD to me........

I flipped the 2 pieces to a customer in Japan for $2,500.......

That about paid for all my calls/time calling antique shops over the years!
