Just bought a Rogers Big R and have a few questions. Last viewed: 23 hours ago

I ordered the Evan's J1 heads per Ploughman's recommendation. Tried to get them in a pack but apparently they do not make a prepackaged set of J1's anymore. The company I ordered from said it will take 3 weeks to get the individual heads in. Seems like a while and nobody locally has them.

Are these heads just not well known about so less shops carry them or are they getting phased out?

I did find 1 pack of the pre 360 heads and I passed on them but maybe I should have snagged them.

I just ordered a rock pack of j1 from ebay...12, 14, 16....56.00 shipped. The price of heads is stupid crazy. If you change tops and bottom, on a five piece cost is at the least, 100, and up from there. Plus another hundred for BD heads. Snare drum... 30.00-40.00.

Approx. 250.00 for a head set. Crazy stupid expensive. Its a good thing they last a long time.

Thanks for the head suggestions. I just went with a fairly standard setup of coated emperors on top and coated ambassadors on the bottom with my 6 ply Camco of similar sizes.

Gunnellett,

First, another big welcome to the forum. As you own both Rogers and Camco, it's surprising you're just joining us now. What else is in your vintage collection? Post some pics!

Thanks for the welcome!

I've only been a vintage drum owner for a couple of weeks so that sparked me to find this forum.

I'll leave the Camco kit for another thread as I'm not quite sure what I have with it but I do like it.

Here is a picture of the Rogers kit. As stated earlier, it is in awesome shape and I love the way it looks. I have not played them yet as like a lot of kits you buy second hand I guess, none of the heads match so I wanted to go with all new heads on the toms before playing so I'm patiently waiting for the Evans J1 heads to get here.

As part of the deal, I also got the Pearl Chad Smith snare and the Ludwig stand in the picture. The Pearl is absolutely mint other than obvious stick marks on the head. I would not have specifically gone out of my way looking for this snare but I think the black nickel goes well with the Rogers kit and it is actually a pretty nice snare.

Got the whole set-up for $325. I wish the floor tom had originally come with the kit but this one matches perfectly looks wise. We'll see sound wise how it blends since it is the 5 ply with re-rings.

I would like to find an 18" floor tom but I'm not sure wether to look for a 5 ply re-ring or the XP-8. Probably whatever comes along in comparable shape and reasonable price. Perfect world would be to find a 16 and 18" XP-8 in black.

What would have been the original batter head on the bass drum?

There is a Remo Emperor clear on it right now.

Thanks

I have an XP8 set with original Clear Ambassador on the front. Rogers with USA under the rs. I have an XP8 original White Dot clear...... I think that would be sound control white dot, Rogers with the XP8 under the R. There were SC white dots, black dots and ambassador clears. Do not know for sure about others.
