So, I'm psyched out of my mind right now; a friend of mine just gave me two Ludwig snares. This is what I got...

Hard to tell the date stamp in the pic, but it says 1959. I have no idea what I'm looking at here, but it looks awesome!

EDIT : My Google-ing got my to know this is a transition-badge mahogany snare. Cool!!!

The second one may be a mod-job; looks to be but still probably sounds great:

The WFL badge is slightly suspect.

What do the experts think? My friend had these sitting in his attic and never knew it. I'll put them to good use :) The first one (the '59) already sounds great.

The first looks like a transition badge pioneer, nickle hardware in mohogany Finnish, I learned to play drums in elementary school on one of those. 1959 would be correct... As for the WFL ( i think an auditorium model?) I will defer to one of the gurus here, but the p85 and butt are later additions, if the badge and shell are correct. while wfl and ludwig script parts are sometimes seen on transition era stuff, the 70's logo is way off. Either way great come up!

I like Drums...
1963 Ludwig Downbeat Champagne Sparkle
1964 Leedy (Slingerland) Blue n Silver Duco
1964 Ludwig Club Date Sparkling Silver Pearl
1966 Ludwig Super Classic Sparkling Silver Pearl
1968 Gretsch round badge modern jazz orange stain
1972 Slingerland 85N Pop outfit Light Blue Pearl
1976 Ludwig Vistalite clear
1981 Gretsch SSB Gran Prix Rosewood
1987 Yamaha Turbo Tour Custom Mellow Yellow
1991 Pearl Export Ferrari Red

The first is a sweet one; the second is a re-wrap, as witnessed by all the extra holes. Doesn't really look like a Ludwig shell, but I could be way off there.........marko

Either way I'm very happy with these. The 59 has a great sound. I haven't been able to test the other yet because I don't have a spare strainer but I'm looking forward to it.

I'm considering doing a re-wrap on the red Ludwig; I want it to match my red sparkle Star kit.. How easy do you think it will be getting a matching wrap? Mine is almost borderlined maroon. But I think it was the standard color they offered on that kit anyway so it must be obtainable...
