Just joined, just bought 1969 Pearl Presidents! Last viewed: 8 hours ago

Hi Vintage Drum Forum, just wanted to introduce myself. I'm a drummer from Portland, OR. My wife and I moved the PNW a year ago, but I had to leave my old kit back in Chicago :(. The good news is our church was glad to receive the donation and it's being played almost every day! I do miss my meinl's though.

Anyway, I needed a kit but haven't found an opportunity until lately. That's when I found a listing in the Seattle area C-list for a 1969 Pearl President 3-piece. Perfect for me, since I usually only use one rack tom and the floor. It's a 13 inch rack, 16 inch floor and a 20 inch kick. The best part: I scored it for 200 bucks!

I also found a listing in the same neck of the woods for a vintage slingerland snare, what appears to be a chrome over brass. It included a suitcase style ludwig case (blue velvet interior, false bottom for stand and sticks) for 50 bucks!

I picked both of them up today, and wanted to know if you could help me identify my snare? Also, it has a dent in it. It seems as if a rubber mallet might be the best way to get that out, but the snare sounds great. Any thoughts? Thanks a ton! Stoked to be a part of the group here.

Welcome to the forum!

now that's a great deal, especially with the snare... if you invest some time, it will clean up even nicer....! Also love the color of the Pearls :-) and yes, it's the Krupa model!

Totally cool wrap. Nice score. Just wondering why you had to abandon your prior kit in Chicago? Too big? The wife? (lol...)

Welcome! Nice score on both counts. Looks like the original bass drum tom mount system has been changed to a more modern style. I'd be inclined to change it back to something more in keeping with 1969 than the current 1989 style.

Thanks! I had to abandon the kit due to funds and lack of space when we moved out here. We packed everything we owned in our hatchback and "started over" if you will. I should have at least brought my cymbals, though.

Thanks! I'm not actually familiar with the 69 vs 89 style (new to vintage drums in general). Any examples or comparisons you could share?

Thanks for the ID! I appreciate it. It sounds great, even with the dent!

Here is a link to the 69 Pearl catalog so you can compare what you have to what once would have been. http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/pearl_drumsets_1969.htm

The catalogs can be found on this very site (top right hand corner - vintage drum guide)

It looks like what is fitted to your kit is a chunky style tom mount and arm that appeared in the 80's and are still used today. Finding the correct parts shouldn't be too hard and it will look period correct. Also, the original mounts works fine.

Welcome to the forum! That's a great score, enjoy them! I'm glad to hear that you were able to get another kit, and at such a great deal. I have one of those snares and it sounds absolutely killer - you're gonna love it! Let us know what you end up doing for cymbals.
