Open handed drumming was developed because of the awkward crossing of the hands that happens when a drummer plays a groove on the hats and snare. Open handed technique eliminates the need to ever cross the hands while playing. In fact, the only 'rule' I know in connection to open handed drumming is; never cross your hands while you're playing. It requires real ambidextrous ability to switch the lead from right to left and then back again as needed while playing a number. Great way to strengthen your weak hand and bring it up to par in terms of control and power with your dominant hand.

I love drums too. Been playing over 50 years, still struggling to get it where I want it. With drums, it's all about the journey, not the destination.
