I've been having this issue with my kick drum lately. It doesn't slide, but it often tries to tip forward when I hit it. I've thought about putting something inside to maybe weigh it down but I don't want it to affect the sound. Any tips on tipping kick drums?
Kick drum tipping Last viewed: 1 hour ago
Maybe I should try lowering the beater on my kick pedal... Damn I wish I had my kit at home. I think that will do the trick, though any more tips will be appreciated!
Make certain that the entire bass drum pedal is firmly on the floor. Extend the bass drum spurs only far enough so that the front bass drum hoop is approximately one inch off of the floor. Those two tips should keep the bass drum from tipping forward. One thing that you didn't mention is what is mounted on the bass drum. There might be too much weight toward the front of the drum to keep it from wanting to tip over in that direction.
I don't mount anything on my kick drum. Also, I use a DW9000, so the pedal is definitely firmly on the floor. I tried bringing the beater down a bit which seems to work, but now I've lost some of the power in my kick pedal. Ugh.
That is good info about having the kick drum off the ground. I never knew that and I have the front of mine sitting on a rug Falling Do........I will make the correction tomorrow.
I think you have to run up on them from the side to tip them over. I've included an illustrated tutorial.

PS - Oops, sorry, I thought the thread was about cow-tipping!
Maybe a stupid question?
But is it a Pearl kick drum with the spurs mounted mid shell ??
Cheers

It's a ludwig vistalite kick drum. Lifting the front end a bit has definitely helped, but it seems my spurs (since they are the small 5/16" spurs, not the 1/2" because they don't fit the drum) are slipping slightly. It's tough to take a photo of the problem since it only happens while I play...

Supro - how hard do you kick the drum when you play it? Some guys play with a lot of force behind the hits. Technique 'may' be contributing to the problem. Something to look at anyway.

Check out the casting/mounts for the spurs where the wing screws go in. Check for over tightening and cracks, as well as pulled threads. If any on these have occurred, you might be able to repair the castings with heli-coil thread insert repairs. If the castings are cracked, it may be possible to still repair them, depending on how badly cracked they are. However, if any of those problems have occurred, you may want to find a better pair of castings instead. Slipping of the wing screws, or not tightening up properly, will cause the spurs to move around or even retract slightly, rendering them useless for their intended purpose, also causing your tipping problem.
