KickPort Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Does anyone have any experience with the KickPort? I'm pretty new to the idea, have only just recently heard about them and they seem pretty nifty. Pretty impressive from some of the sound samples and comparisons that I've heard. I love the sound of my kick drum, but more boom is always fun.

Feedback?

Thanks all :)

I've used one on my 22" Ludwig Vistalite for about a year. After installing it I was able to remove the small amount of muffling I was using inside the drum. I don't mic my drums. No one has ever commented on noticing any difference in the sound. I assume no news is good news but with guitar players you never know :)

I'm a fan.

What I noticed was the ability to not need pillows or other laundry in my kick drum.

Yeah- I'm THAT guy!!!

I've not tried one yet. But i've read lots of good things about them. I did come across the "megaport" on ebay. They look kinda mean. Check them out.

What if I'm not really in need of any muffling, but would like the extra punch and low end? Would it be worth it for me or would it just deaden the sound too much?

Hi, Supro!

I play a Star 20 inch bass at least twice a week. I use a Danmar kick pad covered with a leather patch. My bass is also muffled with a vintage Ludwig bass muffler. I am miced. In my opinion, the sound is thumping and clear! My bass can be viewed under Drum Image Galley, Star Set in Turquoise ( something close to that anyway). Since I have no experience with kickports, perhaps I shouldn't even venture forth an opinion. I have been drumming for forty years though. In my experience, I would say: tune the bass carefully, experiment with various heads, try various pads, clamp on mufflers were invented for such a purpose, remove the pillows, repeat all steps and play that bass!

Just a drummer who loves all things about vintage drums! Nothing more, nothing less.

I actually have a great sounding kick drum, and I don't use any muffling or anything, just pure drum sound the way I like it. Buuuut, if I have the chance to make it sound even better with a kickport, ill take it. I guess they are only 40 bucks or so, so maybe Ill just take the chance and try it out. If it's not my thing, I can always take it out. My kick really doesn't need improving, I guess I'm just curious.

After reading the information available from the manufacturer I think the KickPort is actually designed as an aid for an improved miked sound. I really don't think they do much if your not miking the drum.

I have kicks with and without. The kickport will make your kick sound different, not sure "better" qualifies.

I found it tightened up focus, brought out more mid low, and killed some of the ring. (Sometimes I like the effect, sometimes not so much.)

To my ears the kickport sound is most compatible with rock and contemporary country (one and the same mostly).
