Krupa-Wilson, The Lost Interview Last viewed: 7 hours ago

Loading...

In light of yet another discussion built around the merits of Mr. Denis Wilson and other musicians of his era, I believe that the time is now opportune for me to release an interview which I was fortunate to acquire years ago from a friend who will remain anonymous. The interview was held in the offices of Playboy in Chicago in March of 1965. The interviewer was Mr. Shel Silverstein, writer, musician and cartoonist from Playboy Magazine. The interviewees were Mr. Denis Wilson and Mr. Gene Krupa. The subject matter was the impact of the music of the so -called "British Invasion Bands". Unfortunately, the interview was never printed. During that same month, 3,500 brave Americans were sent to Vietnam. That is the story that took precedent of course.

If there is enough interest out there, I will release snippets of the interview in the interest of music and drumming in particular.

Let me know. I'll wait to see if enough interest is generated before I take any further steps.Thanks.

Brian

Brian, why only 'snippets'? Ask permission to publish the entire interview here. It'll be read by a lot of people, that's for sure.

My ex-wife's cousin (and my friend for 40 years,) is Paul Vitello. He's a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist who currently works for the NY Times. Thirty-five years ago, when he wore a younger man's clothes, he wrote feature articles for Rolling Stone. In the early 70's he was assigned to interview Bob Dylan while Dylan was on a tour of the mid-west. The day Paul was scheduled to Interview Dylan they became snowed-in at the hotel they were both staying in. It was just him and Dylan alone in the dining room for hours. Dylan was at the apex of his Christian conversion era and he rambled on for hours about it. The interview, which provides a window into the mind and deeply held personal beliefs/world view of a modern day icon like Bob Dylan was never published. Rolling Stone opted not to become a channel for Dylan's fervent Christian proselytizing. The article was rife with Biblical quotes and pronouncements from Dylan. Like I said earlier, it was a very revealing snapshot of Dylan's mental/thought processes at the time. It's a shame it was never published. Paul let me read it and it blew my mind.

By all means, please publish the Krupa/Wilson interviews. Stuff like that was -meant to be read-! As a musician, to me, that material is -historical record- and of great interest to anyone who loves music and especially anything that provides insight into the musical mind/thinking of drum-set innovators like Krupa.

Post away!

John

Too many great drums to list here!

I would absolutely love, Love, LOVE to see read this interview in its entirety.

Having not had the good sense to be born while he was alive and performing (I was born 10/16/72) I've tried to listen to, watch, and read anything I could find about my drumming hero.

Knowing Peter Chris, Jerry Nolan and (I believe) Dino Danelli were students of his gives me some indication, but I've always wondered what Gene's thoughts were on "Rock" drummers...and Rock & Roll in general.
