L-arm rod with 5/8 downtube for Luddy Standard? Last viewed: 9 hours ago

Loading...

I am wrapping up a restoration on a 68-71 Ludwig Standard that uses the 5/8 down tube. Of course the kit came to me with the original tom holder missing so I am wondering if anyone makes a replacement that will fit? I was looking at Gibralter and all of theirs are 7/8. Or if I should just widen the hole and fire on the more readily available Ludwig tom holder from the 70's with the wider 1inch down tube?

Thanks

D

If you alter the configuration you will automatically reduce the value and resale value of your kit. Start searching for the missing needed piece(s). There's plenty of them around. Do your homework.

Thanks Buckie. This is pretty much a players kit with one extra hole already in the kick. That is the only reason I am considering the altercation to the original opening. That and the stability that would be added by using the superior mount. I did do some research on the subject and really only found 1 work around that I did not like and there really is not a lot of these original tom arms around and when they come up on Ebay they go quick and for a good amount because of their rarity. Most of them at half the cost of what I payed for the entire kit. I would spring for that no problem if the kit was mint but it is a decent players set at best with the extra hole already in the kick. I would love to find a modern L arm rod that would work and fit the 5/8 opening but if that doesn't exist I need an alternative to get them up and playing.

The original 5/8 models are a little hard to find. My Ludwig Educators used that same mount/arm for the bass drum. I got one on ebay a few months back but had to pay a premium for it, 75 or 80 bucks i think.

If you have a tom stand that uses ball mount L arms Gilbralter makes a 9mm ball arm. They are cheap too. I just bought a couple for my ball arm stands if I want to use one to mount my Ludwig toms.

5/8ths chrome tubing cut from the top of an old mic stand. Tube cap on the top with a clamp on ball-arm tom mount attached (9.5mm L rod on the ball). Works much better for gigging than the original (which I do have for originality sake). The memory lock is a good idea too. The base plate has a tendency to letting the tube slip and turn.

I've got everything you need to make that mount. Let me know if you want it.
