Last Night Last viewed: 14 hours ago

Well, last night I played out after a 30 year sabbatical. I guess that I can now check off another item on my "bucket list".

I played at a local American Legion Hall. I had almost forgotten how much fun this could actually be. I wasn't sure which kit to bring but space was limited, as would be expected, so I brought out my WMP Downbeat kit that's shown in the pic I attached. The sound was so good that it "almost" made me sound respectable, which isn't an easy thing to do!

Everything worked out great -- the crowd, the food, and the music. The only thing that could have made it even better is if I would have been lucky enough to "hit" on one of the two 50/50 raffles they had. Our guitarist's wife gladly took home the winnings from one of them though.

I also forgot how much "fun" it is to set-up and tear down all the musical equipment for these one-night stands. Gotta go --- an "ICY HOT" patch has got my name written all over it!

Well, at least you didn'y have to move a B-3 and Leslie....We had to move that monster everytime we played, which was sometimes several times a week during the school year...Oy Vey!! and they dropped it on my foot once or twice. Everytime I see one, my right foot aches...

Good for you! Now when is the next gig?D' Drummer

OldSchool - I know the feeling!! After more or less of a sabatical for 30 years (I didn't quit playing completely) I recently got back together with three "surviving" members of our old 60's rock group to play for a party at a friend's home. We were actually accompanying a blues/rock guitarist/vocalist from New Orleans. A drummer's dream; a really talented guy who knows all the old arrangements and knows how to lead with eye contact. It was great! I have played that LOUD and "loose" in decades. I didn't know if I still had "IT" in me, but I guess you never really lose it, it just gets rusty. Damn that felt good!!

Ahh, the "fun" of set up and tear down. That has got to be the worst thing about playing drums...Can't stand it! I am always first one to the gig and the last to leave. The process is one of the things that drove me to playing guitar 20+ years ago. I got sick of watching the guitar players showing up with an amp(some blues clubs even have house amps) and a guitar and they would be ready to go in little under a minute.

Cool to hear that you are playing out! What kind of group are you gigging with?

Oldschool, I love this story. Good to hear you're out playing again. It's almost criminal for someone who so obviously loves vintage drums as much as you to remain out of the limelight. So cool.

THANKS to all for the comments and positive feedback.

VINTAGEMORE2000: I'm sure you realize that my comments regarding the "fun" of setting up and tearing down were sarcastic in nature.

JONNISTIX: "I feel your pain!" Although I didn't have to move a B-53 and/or Leslie I did help moving our PA system and some amps up and down the stairs and that was enough "excitement" for me (lol)! As far as the next gig, July is vacation time for most of the band members, but we've got a few lined up for August and September. It should be fun!

GGVINTAGE: Thanks for sharing your story. It sounds like you had an awesome time. We actually had a female singer from the audience come up and sing "Stormy Monday" with us last Saturday and man did she nail it.

LUDWIGS4LIFE: I can totally relate to ALL of your comments, believe me!

EMPIREDRUM: We've currently got lead, rhythm & bass guitars, an organist/keyboard player and drums. Everyone sings but me (thank God!) and we've also got a back-up female vocalist. Right now we're doing mainly "old school" tunes by groups like The Allman Brothers, The Robert Cray Band, Santana, Ray Charles, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Ben E. King, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt and the like.

MCJNIC: Thanks for your support. The folks on this forum have all been extremely kind and helpful to me from the first day I joined. I truly appreciate the "family" atmosphere. I guess "old guys" like me should be playing "old drums". I must say that the Downbeat kit I used Saturday night really sounded nice. I wasn't really sure which vintage kit I'd take with me but thought that the smaller sizes would be the best due to the space constraints.
