I know a fair bit about the "big four" US vintage drum makers but don't know all that much about Leedy. Not asking for huge detail or anything as I will do more reading here on the site but in brief, just wondering how Leedy's quality/sound/value measures up to say, Slingerland or Ludwig. There's a 60's Leedy kit on the local CL:

I believe in the 60's Leedy was owned by Slingerland and used the same 3ply shells for both lines, the only difference being the lugs.
I may buy a Leedy champagne sparkle 12 and 20 with a a Slingerland champagne sparkle 16 for $450, they are great drums.
Spot on. That is a Slingerland kit. It should most likely have mahogany/poplar/mahogany shells with a very rounded over edge, which should sound beautiful. Excellent quality. Obviously, go on site to check it out in person, as we cannot tell the overall condition. It might have maple as the inner ply ... it varied a bit during this time period. Interesting bass Ts and mount. Hmmmm.
Thank you muchly!
I get overwhelmed with all the Ludwig/Slingerland/Leedy partnerships, mergers, buy-outs, takeovers etc...
So it's good to know that they're essentially Slingerlands, thanks!
That's not a bad price at all if they are in good shape.
Sadly, the drums are gone.:(
Word of advice, if there's something on your local CL that looks good, better be willing to act immediately or risk disappointment. I'm sure you guys are all ol' pros at this by now. I learned my lesson. Had it all worked out in my head too, what kind of heads to put on them etc...
I went to look at them. Color was Black Diamond Pearl. They were in good condition generally. New skins needed all around. All lugs and rods original and accounted for. All badges in excellent shape with serial numbers clear. The original tom mount was missing (using a snare stand) but the receivers on the BD and tom were there, original and complete. A number of new hardware items required to clean up the set such as matching floor tom leg locks, I think the floor tom legs were mismatched so 3 new ones would put that right, no big deal. BD spur locking nuts need replacing. All the torsion rods and claws on the BD were original. Both BD hoops were delaminating and need replacement. BD pedal was original Leedy Shelly Mann model with leather belt drive. Snare drum was Rogers R360 model, probably 25 years newer than the rest of the kit and in good condition. Couldn't see the bearing edges but they are probably OK. The kit has all the signs of having been played and used as a musical instrument, which is why it was built in the first place. I'm one of those guys who thinks vintage products should be used. Vintage racing cars should be on the track racing against other vintage racing cars, not in a museum. I think the asking price of C$600 was very fair. If the hardware was cleaner and complete, add $200. If the original tom holder was there, add another $200, if the original snare was there, add another $200-300, and so on and so on. It's a vintage kit and it's lack of availability makes it worth more. I could see it becoming a really nice kit with some TLC and hopefully finding a few original parts to make it complete. In the end I took a pass as I am not looking for such a major project at this time.
This discussion was from a couple weeks back. Thanks for that info Coates. Appreciate you posting it.
I was kicking myself at the time for not jumping on this kit but now that I hear it's a bit of a project, I'll be able to sleep at night.
Thanks again for the peace of mind!
