Leedy Drums Last viewed: 11 hours ago

Shelly Manne was such an important jazz player in his day, and yet the drums he endorsed did not do nearly as well as other competing brands. I find this surprising given how nice these sound coupled with his cymbal set, his skills and the skill of the rest of the band.

Can anyone detect if he is using a 20-inch or an 18-inch bass drum here? I notice that it is a 1962 film, and the bass has standard telescopic spurs, but not the type that extended from the center of the drum with a slight forward angle that I'm used to seeing on both Slingerland and Leedy drums. Might that be a sign it was a small bass drum?

Great clip. Thanks for sharing that.

I couldn't quite tell the size by the video. I am attaching a pic here of an old Ebay item that I saved in my pics. It's a postcard of some type showing two 18' bass drum Leedy kits. Might help give a reference.

Looks like a 20" bass to me. Having owned an 18" bass a few times in the past, something about that clip strikes me as its too big to be an 18".

I tend to agree given that his knee is only a couple inches above the top.

Thanks for the replies guys.
