Other drummers set-ups is not going to be very helpful. Go back to basics and start from scratch. Set your throne down, sit down and start by placing the bass drum and hat pedals under your feet where you need them. Then one drum, one cymbal at a time, place them where you need them to be for -your- playing comfort/ease. Make the drums come to you, not the other way around.

You may end up with an unconventional set-up, but so what? You'll feel 'at home' back there and that's all that counts. Experiment! Carter has one of the most complex set-ups in the business, (after Bozzio and Peart!) I don't think that studying or copying Beauford's set-up is going to help you much. Create your own! It's the only way you'll be happy playing. Adjusting yourself to somebody else's set-up/ergonomics, will make the transition you are attempting that much harder to accomplish. :2Cents:
