This one is probably for Tommy P.or maybe Blair---I had written in before asking about Legend drums (Kaman- 90's). Thread was originally brought out about 5 years ago but I still have some unanswered questions and I'm looking for a kit. I know that Joe and his brother built the 1st round or two of snares. It seemed that there were two badges during the life of those drums. First one was the red badge Legend and then came the Black badge Legend. Red badge drums have no paper tags inside--but all the black badge drums seemed to have had paper tags w/ model, year of production...etc.

Besides my red badge 5.5x 14 Keller shell... I also have 6.5x 14 bronze & 4x14 bronze- both with no badge--(wondering why) but saw a black badge bronze 4x 14 on e-bay that ended yesterday with black badge & paper tags. Can I assume the earlier Red Badge drums were built by Joe?...and black badge later on after?

Why don't you PM me when you have a chance... I'll get you in touch with the man himself: Joe Montineri. Funny on the timing of your post... Joe just called me yesterday! He would certainly be able to answer ALL your questions with ease... and then some!

i bought a 5x14 red black badge maple snare with diecast hoops with 42 strand snare its superb, my engineer says its the best snare hes worked with in 20 years

Hi,

I am far from an expert on Legends.

I have only owned 2 snares,which went for **** on ebay.

I DID go out for dinner with Joe and his brother in the early 90's in Bethesda,Maryland after a vintage show though!

His brother was funnier then ****,I recall..............

I can's speak to Legend either, but I have owned a couple of Joe's personal label snares and they were fantastic!

I had someone trying to trade me a "Joe" for one of my MIJ kits....thinkin' maybe I should have taken the deal. May still have the opp, it seems it keeps popping up on C/L.

I have a 5x14 maple Montineri eight-lugger snare that's one of the best jazz drums I've played. I don't keep up with what the fair market value is on those Montineri snares--I guess I just assume they're undervalued--but I'd consider a swap for an MIJ kit entirely fair.

Currently playing for loud rock and roll gigs:
1982 Ludwig Classic in white Cortex, 24-13-14-18 + Coliseum snare
For quieter gigs:
Early '70s Whitehall Tiger Eye Pearl 20-12-14-14
Neglected but thinking about:
Early '70s Sonor Champions in Rosewood, 22-12-13-16

I don't know. I have a similar Montineri to yours, and I don't think I would trade away a very good sounding drum for 4 or 5 at best mediocre drums. Good sound is my goal. Not number of drums. Of course one might need a set.

Well sir, this is not a mediocre set. This one really does have some mojo all it's pwn. I know, everyone wants to malign Japanese kits as inferior, but some of us actually re-engineer them a bit and make very good kits out of what others consider junk. I don't want an argument, I am just making a statement that the 60s, 70s and 80s are long gone, and we learned a few tricks over the years. Having been in the antiques restoration and repair business, I learned some tricks and other woodworking ideas that have made a difference in my life, and those of others, including some drummers that wouldn't sell my drums today because they have a sound all their own, nothing like them out there. One snare I rebuilt is in the hands of a drummer that refuses to sell it back to me, at a huge profit.

Just saying, some of us do know what we are doing, and many others can wipe off years of crud and make 'em purty...x-mas3

I meant from the other side, atomicmorganic--that jonnistix could do worse than to trade an MIJ kit for a Montineri snare. And jonnistix, I'm saying that from the perspective of someone who owns, plays out, and loves an old Whitehall kit. I don't think they're at best mediocre drums; far from it. But they're easier to come by (in general) at good prices than these snares.
