Looking at buying a Rogers kit - Opinions Please Last viewed: 58 minutes ago

Loading...

Hello Rogers gurus! I'm hoping you can provide me with some sage advice on a Rogers kit that's being offered to me. I haven't seen them yet, but from what I can get from the seller so far, It's a big R badge shell pack, serial number range is 71xxx. Sizes are 12,13,16,22. Apparently they are in excellent shape with original heads. Sounds like the finish is chrome or silver sparkle (the guy doesn't know much about drums, so getting good information out of him has been tough). Admittedly, my Rogers knowledge is very limited, but I've wanted to take the Rogers plunge for some time. My questions are: what should I be looking for? I know that these aren't the most desirable Rogers drums, but I understand they're still pretty good. What kind of price range would you offer for a shell pack such as this? I'm going out to see them tomorrow, so I'll need to get armed with some info quick. Thanks in advance!

Ploughman knows what year, but here's what I can provide. Clear interiors are XP8's, considered some of the best shells by Rogers collectors. 12, 13, 16, 22 is called Londoner series. No extra holes, all original hardware, good condition on wraps, unless a rare wrap, I'd say $400.00-$600.00 is fair. If you get them for less, that's always a bonus. If Dynasonic is included, that's a big bonus.

Hope this helps.

Thanks bbk, I forgot to mention about the interiors. He says they are grey speckled. They are apparently all original with no extra holes. He says he had a snare, but it went missing long ago so we're just looking at the 4 shells.

I actually think the five digit Big R drums are the early Big R drums and should have speckled grey interiors. Rogers mid-70's drums right after they quit using the script badge. Xp8's would be introduced in 79 and have clear interiors with no re-rings and 6 digit serial numbers starting in the 95XXXX range. Ploughman is the expert though and will hopefully shed some light for you.

So they are Fullertons, no snare, no extra holes? Anything under $400.00 is fair market price. Under $250.00 and it's a nice deal with a little meat on the bone to flip if so desired.

From the little I know and from the guy's story of when he got them, it would make sense that they are early big R's. If that is the case and they are Fullertons, how do these shells compare to the older script badge shells? I suppose these are on the less collectible side of things? If so, I'm okay with that if they are good shells that would sound good.

Once beavertail lugs came into use, edges did not change a whole lot, even with the XP8 shell.

This is a 1977 era set.

Five ply shells, that more closely resemble big tag early Fullerton than they do the later 9/72 series produced from 72-75 (3 ply).

Color will probably be this...... Silver Metallic.

Look for stress cracks in the wrap. If the value is good, its a good deal. If cracks are present, and they will be to some extent, get the price lower. Just know, eventually you will need to rewrap. I still own my first set of drums, they are Silver Metallic. I have taken very good care of them over the last 34 years, and I know, eventually, I will rewrap.

So, I went to see them...

First off, thanks again guys for your input. As always, it is much appreciated.

Ploughman - your in depth knowledge of all things Rogers never cease to amaze me. I walked in and saw the exact matching kit to the tom you showed in your picture! So here's the scoop - the wrap is in very, very good condition with only lifting at the seams. Aside from needing a good cleaning, everything else is in very nice condition. One thing that made me raise an eyebrow - the 13" tom has the badge located towards the player, which I thought was strange. Could this tom have been from another kit or was this common? The interiors are indeed speckled as I peered through the tom mount. All original heads are there. Now the problem - we couldn't get together on price. He thinks they're worth way more than they probably are. I got up to $500, and I don't even know why I went up so high in the first place. Anyway, after he refused that, I walked away. I think that was the right thing to do. Anyway, they're still there if either of us change our minds.

That 13 should not face in unless it is from another kit or an xp8 tom that got lumped in with the other 5 ply Big R Drums. From what I understand a lot of Xp8's (if not all) had the badges facing toward the drummer. That 13 would have a clear interior and no re-ring if that was the case. You could probably do better then 500.00 if you shop around considering the snare is missing.

Genuine Factory Set-up of the badge. There were no left or right facing toms during the Big R era.......

here is how they faced...

View..... from above the drum, mount facing away from you

12=Badge left

13=badge left

14=badge right

15=badge right

With a 12 and 13 on a double tom mount, the 12 badge is visible audience side, the 13 visible player side.

With 13 and 14.... both badges visible audience side.

With the introduction of XP8 drums in 1979, badges were quickly moved to a new position 180 degrees opposite the mount.... Always player side view.
