Looking for advice - CAMCO Floor tom Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Guys,

I am new to the whole Vintage drum world. I'm a proud owner of a Hashino/Tama Camco era 4 piece kit. Pictures are in the gallery.

I currently have an 18" tom and have been looking for a matching 16". I found an older LA era 16" tom on eBay (link below). Its completely stripped but looks in good condition.

What should I do? Can I get the Camco lugs somewhere? Do I use DW? What about legs/hardware? My set has the Tama hardware. And then finally how should I approach the rims.

I guess I should say I'm merely trying to get this drum to "sort of" match my set. Not too worried about exacting historical restoration...

The 16" shell does look like its in great condition but IMO pricey. Lugs, leg mounts, tone control, hoops, and trods might cost you quite a bit of money as well. The shell and parts together could cost as much as $600 +. That is if you're looking for Camco parts. You can get away with modern hoops and trods, skip the tone control since they rattle anyway, and just purchase the lugs, leg mounts, and legs...Still might cost more than a complete LA Camco 16X16, but they don't show up too often.

I would imagine that the LA 16" will sound quite a bit different than the drums you have recently purchased, however, I've never played the Hishino Tama so I might be speaking out of line. Just my guess...

I have plenty of spare Camco lugs should you decide to go that route.

Good luck!

Now I'm no camco expert, but the ones in the auction are LA era. You have the hoshino versions wich have a different badge right? And slightly different lugs?

Sanity - Thanks for the advice. Yeah - I would go modern or new materials here. Not trying to make it a restoration. I can tray to negotiate with the guy. He is sort of local (Sacramento).

I'm starting to think that my kits are so rare - I haven't actually seen one like mine at all. So I'm thinking I might never see a 16" in my style in the near future.

Would the modern DW stuff (Hoops and Lugs) and the Tama (Legs and mounts ) work? Any drilling required?

Eminent Destiny - That's an interesting point. I'm thinking it (LA Camco) would just be on the warmer side - but I'm not sure its going to be that much of a diff.

There is a huge thread on my kit discussing the shell provenance. If you want to wade in - the water is warm! LOL!

Thanks!

You should wait on a matching 16" floor tom, an L A era will never sound anything like your drums and then you will have wasted all that money.

I wouldn't recommend mixing tom shells. A different bass drum or snare yes, but toms?

You'll just spoil yourself with that L.A. era Camco floor tom then you won't want your Tamacams any longer.

Slingalud - Trust me when I'm saying I'm not trying to pick a fight.

But how can you know for sure what you are saying? The reason I ask is when I was trying to discover the provenance on my set - I saw some pictures of LA Camco's side by side with my drums and they look almost identical. If you are interested - I have a thread going in the Gallery section. Near the end someone shot an inside pic of their tom.

I do agree that this does seem a bit pricey. Ill keep my eyes open for another option.

As always - I do appreciate the advice and information.

Ive seen the Tamacams and they are not the same shell and don't Even look similar. Plus the Tamacams ARE NOT Undersized by 3/16" to 1/4" per each shell.

Also from a business standpoint why would Tama spend dollars to buy shells from Keller when they have the ability to make their own for pennies...Makes no sense, what so ever, Like Tamacam owners trying desperately to make the connection between Camco and their Tama's with the Camco name on it.

LOL! Nothing desperate here. I'm not really a collector. Just trying to get a floor tom (16").

But if I did have the $$ for collecting drums I know one of the first kits I would get is a Rogers Holiday! My very first kit that I totally destroyed...

But thanks as always!
