Looking for that Fat/Wet Snare - Recommendations? Last viewed: 3 seconds ago

I currently have 6.5 x 14 Supra but I am looking for that fat/wet 70's and early 80's sound. I know that alot of that is gating in the studio but outside of processing, do you have any recommendations? I am going for that Nick Gilder "Hot Child in the City" or Fleetwood Mac sound. I know that I need a deep/wood snare but I would like some specific model recommendations. New or vintage, the cheaper cost wise the better. I am a player, not a collector.

I get a great sound along those lines out of a 6.5 Ludwig Black Galaxy Acrolite (Blacrolite).

Coated Ambassador very low tension (barely any). One piece of Moon-Gel. Sometimes my wallet. Bottom head relatively cranked but not too tight on the strainer. You should be able to get it from the Supra. I've had a LOT of compliments on the sound and folks wondering if the Blackrolite was a Black Beauty.

Other than that a 6.5 Ludwig Auditorium or Pioneer are a good bets with similar tuning. You should be able to find one for not too much as they were "student" drums.

I'm curious about the new Club Date snares too. Since those are 4-ply Cherry/Gum wood with Birch re-rings...and under 2 bills.

Hi,

I'm also a big Fan of that Kind of Sound. I reached great Results with the same Supra that you have, Ambassador coated (clear on Bottom), Standard Snares and: a Variety of Muffle Rings to put on Top, like Steve Gadd did.

Deep down tuning and, most important: Do not hit too hard! No Rimshots, just a nice medium Backbeat will bring that meaty, deep and soft yet powerful Tone.

Good Luck,

Lars

Hello! I too am a big Fleetwood Mac fan although we play only original tunes. I don't even have a conventional snare in my kit. For the big sound that I too like, I use a vintage Star marching snare (15x15) with an Evan's Black Chrome top head. The bottom is a Remo Ambassador. The old marcher is also miced. Before I get to my two 13 inch toms, I have a vintage Tama Piccolo snare mounted on a conventional stand. I wouldn't trade the sound I get from that old parade drum for anything! Just a suggestion which is a little outside the box.

The secret is no tension. I use a damping ring on my 6.5 Supra and the lugs are so loose they almost rattle. Granted there is minimal to no rebound but man it records wonderfully. Live I try to always have the bottom head mic'd as well as the top. Just my two cents

I'm not an expert, by any means, but I'm going to guess you'll easily get that sound with a "wide" snare, like 15". Just being a wide snare will also get you a "deep" snare of at least 6.5".

I converted a Ludwig 12"x15" 16 lug marching snare to a 6.5"x15" regular snare. Ludwig listed this model under the School Festival (P-85) name.

I'm really happy with the way this snare sounds. It's really "fat" when tuned low and the wires are loose, but tune it really high and it resembles a Jazz Festival on steroids. Loud and open with those Ludwig woody overtones.

I'm sure you could also achieve that fat/wet sound with your 402 with the right heads, wires and tuning.

FWIW, Jimmy Hunter played drums for Nick Gilder on Hot Child in the City. There's a video of him playing a double bass kit that looks like it has Camco lugs, but I'm not sure about the snare.

Keep us updated on what you try.

Just throw an Evans hydraulic heads on,or use an old drum head, and cut the hoop off so it sits flat on your snare.

Some moon gel or gaff tape hear and there, and you'll be soundin like Stan Lynch in no time.

You need a thin leather wallet containing a wad of bills. Currency of the bills is also worth considering.

Funny Post The fatter the wallet, the fatter the sound!

But Chappy50 is also right... low tension. Think about how fat those rope tension snare drums sound. Put a Fiberskyn on any wood snare (at least 6.5" deep), loosen the tension of the batter head and just enough tension on the reso head to eliminate any snare ringing and you might just find that fat sound you're looking for.

Thanks for the replies. I guess the major consensus is that my drum is capable but I suck at tuning . I can accept that and it is much cheaper to realize that vs buying a new drum Laughing H

I am running a coated emp over a hazy ambassador. I will loosen that top head more and release some tension on the strainers. I have moon gel on the snare already, but I can try some duct tape and cloth since a wallet will get in my way practicing. I totally forgot about trying an evans hydro head. Thanks for the suggestions.....
