looking into an older set of red psych ludes and could use some knowledge Last viewed: 4 hours ago

so im looking into a set of suposedly 71 red psychs. 12-13-16-24. the greens are pretty cremed out though evenly throughout. which i dont mind the look of but i do understand effects value. the only thing i know of wrong with them otherwise is that the wrap is delaminating at the seam of one of the toms.

the reason for wanting them is strictly because i havent had a wood kit in ages and would love a right hand kit until my resto is done.

my questions are as follows

- how hard would it be to fix the wrap?

- what is a fair price as described knowing that i have to do a bit of work at least and if i dont love them im going to pass them on?

- anything fishy to look for as far as the wrap goes? i know its rare so im sure it has variants and fakes

thanks in advance for any pointers here

Hi Mark,As far as your questions. To fix the wrap thats a easy fix to do all you need is alittle glue and "C" clamps..If the set is complete not missing any parts, has no mod's i would say 500.00 to 700.00 for the drums only..alittle more if stands come with the set.To check the wrap if you can remove a lug and chack the wrap under it see if it looks better that the wrap nest to it.If it loks the same them its a re-wrapped set you can also check the edges of the drums see if they are re-cut or not..Oh one more thing are you sure that the bass drum is a 24" not a 22" most of these sets had a 22" bass drum but Ludwig also did offer for a small fee to change out the 22" to a 24" bass drum...Mikey

awesome. glad i got some insight before i went to make an offer on them. guy is asking over double that first number there. so unless i bring something slightly better than an a game, im afraid ill be coming home empty handed tomorrow. if im right i bought a 62-3 SS snare off this guy in fairly decent condition for like 75. talk about bi-polar pricing.

however i am pretty sure it is a 24 bass. is it that much rarer? cause with the wraps being faded and 1 lifting it seems like thats the only thing they have going for them other than being older ludwigs

anyhow thanks for the wisdom mikey

Common for wrap on the early 70s ludwigs to start separating. No drills on the drums, and not too bad fading, I'd put more of a range.. if the bass is a 24, anywhere between $500 and $1000. In general though the higher the price the more you should really want them to keep.

I don't know... A 24" psych red bass drum is pretty rare. Unless the color is TOTALLY gone I would think the drums should be worth over $1000.00. The lifting wrap is totally common for 70's Ludwigs. I think it sounds like a cool set. Let us know how it goes.

+1 Pounder/wflkurt. That 24" is rare. If the wrap is not too badly faded, the kit, plus some stands, will fetch $1000 or better. Any price you can negotiate under a thousand dollars will be a good buy.

Too many great drums to list here!

yes i did! theyre in player condition for sure, but the greens actually fade in and out nicely. over paid a bit i think but i love them so far. cant wait to set them up in the morning. 3 ply with rings. 12-14-16-24. 12 and 16 deffinetly match early 71. bass has a transitional blank badge and the 14 is slightly higher in number than the rest, but no doubt its been with this set a loooong time if it didnt come factory as a set. i was completely shocked when he said he made that kind of mistake though. dude is supposed to send me a ton pics of them at gigs and recordings of the set too. very nice bonus

thanks for the help guys. im psyched!
