Luddy Standard RETRO-FIT with Classics Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Here's a pic of a standard snare lug, that literally tore apart. I have never seen a classic lug do this.

I've never seen that before! To be fair, check out how far the lug screw is screwed into that receiver! Man! You'd have t reeeeeeeallly torque down on that screw to get it in that far. I think that, under more "normal" circumstances, the Standard lugs are fine...but I won't dispute that the Classics are probably the classiest lugs on Earth!

*Edit* PLUS....Notice the type of screw used to attach the P-83? That's NOT the right kind of screw for that purpose. This drum was not well-treated over the course of its life and I am more suspicious of some kind of abuse when I see things like that. It's definitely not the norm for this type of catastrophic event to occur with Standard lugs, in my experience.

*Edit* I'm thinking the guy lost some of the original lug screws, used some wrong screws, cracked the lug housing and then over-torqued the lug screw which caused the cracked housing to finally split. Bright canary yellow was never a Standard finish, so I know the lugs have been taken off. The p-83 is evidence that wrong screws were used in reassembly...etc.

This is the snare of a 5 piece I bought at a garage sale for $75. it had no badges and had been rewraped. I just finished converting the whole kit to classics and wraped it in citrus mod. I still have the broken lug. I'll get it out and examine it further. Im just glad these drums had the rims on them. A old drum sitting around and being moved around for yrs without rims on it play hell on the edges.

I dug all the snare lugs out. I removed all the inserts already though. I had a pile of classic lugs that either had the short inserts or no inserts. I polished these long inserts and reused them. IM thinkin maybe someone dropped the snare and it landed on these 2 lugs and broke them. I agree that you'd have to really torque down on a lug to break it like that. These are the same lugs thats on the later model rockers BTW

Here's the 2 different tom trees. There is quite a difference here....

This standard tree has a 3rd attachment in the center of the tree for a 3rd tom. .

From mcjnic

... and now, the real response. The Classic lug is just a better built lug. The Standard lugs have been known to strip out fairly easily. They are also not as visually recognizable. The same goes for the floor tom leg / cymbal mounts and the bass tom tree. These items are just hurkier and flat out work. That's really all there is to this. People want the Ludwig drums to look like Ludwig drums ... hardware and all.

Another possability on the cracked lug. Maybe the former owner did use wrong tension rods. Perhaps he tried to screw a tension rod that was too long, when the longer tension rod hit the tension rod on the oppisite side of the lug the head wasnt tight and he tried to force it and the lug split.

Yeah, I agree, Poppy. It's a good topic!

Well, upon looking at the other pics of the lugs, I think my theory was incorrect....but, still, that's not a typical occurrence with ANY lug design, so I'm suspicious of something else. Maybe your theory about overly long lug screws is correct. Maybe it got dropped under extreme tension....hard to say.

Someone would have to really crank down on a tension rod to break a lug. Another possability, perhaps he tried to put a head on it that was a hair too small and tried to force it by cranking down on the tension rod. After all these were rewrapped with that ugly yellow cortex wrap. I had problems putting the bottom head on my floor tom after I wrapped it. I tried a few that were just a hair too small and ended up putting a ebony pinstripe I had laying around on there.
