Ludwig 1121-rubber cup? Last viewed: 3 hours ago

I''m working on a couple of these... I have three different types of rubber cups for the cymbal on the top tube. Two of them have no sleeve for the cymbal. One has a Ludwig logo, the other doesn't. No tilter, either.

The third has a logo, and it has a tilter. A well meaning and practical owner from long ago glued a plastic cymbal sleeve into it. It is really the most useful, but I sure would like to get the glue off it. It's a sort of puddle around the sleeve, dried clear, harder than kryptonite! I'd like to get it out of there, just for authenticity, but I'd destroy the cup before I got that stuff off of there -- and the rubber would melt LONG before the glue did!

So the question: did these have cymbal sleeves on them?

If not, I have to devise a plan to get one so that the hats can be played!

Ideas??

Thanks!!

the last run of the 1121s that had the regular tips on the base instead of the flat button feet, did come with the same cup as the 1123. this cup has ludwig on it and a tilter. it also has a built in center sleeve that is part of the rubber cup i think. not all of those last design 1121's had those cups. but many did.

ive got a late 50's/early 60's 1121 that has the cup with no tilter. it does have ludwig on it. i cannot recall if it has the cymbal sleeve(rubber lip) or not. it is packed away right now.

hope this helps some...

ps just found the cup for the 1121. doesnt have a center sleeve but looks like it did at one time and has worn or broken off.

Thanks Mike -- the one with the rubber feet is the one I'd like to restore with original type parts... and it sounds like the one I have, with the puddle of glue, is the correct one.

Which kind of sucks, because I'm working to really make this really fine. I rather strongly suspect that I'll never find one, either.

But this will also be played, so... the puddle of glue could be entirely insignificant. Just my obsessive nature coming to the fore.

I just rec'd an NOS, original box 1123, and it has the steel plate welded on the top -- or is that a press fit?? (If it's a press fit, I may sacrifice the top tube to the 1121 restoration...)

So, it sounds like the earlier 1121 (button feet) had no tilter or sleeve, the transitional 1121 (rubber tips) had the sleeve and tilter. Both had logos.

But maybe not. Hmmmm

It also sounds like there was a real mix n' match going on at the factory at the time!

usually the 1121 and 1123's have the rubber cups. the 1123-1(non flat based) that came out shortly thereafter had the steel plate as the bottom cup.

i love reading about your hardware restorations. you do it right! nice to see that kinda of detail and attention given to these things that we enjoy.

thanks, mike - much more satisfying to preserve the original when it's possible. sometimes the mechanical upgrades are worth it.

although I DID just learn how to peen the rivet on the toe of the SK footboard, so now I can put in the nylon bushing for the pedal and still have the original look. i like that.

anyone have a line on one of these cups? the guy who's interested in the 1121 with rubber tips would be cool with the glue thing...but a primo piece would be the best...

I like your attention to detail, too. But maybe I misread your post---did you say you were gonna cannibalize a NOS 1123 to fix a used 1121? How about if I send you what you need for your project in exchange for your NOS stand? Seriously...I must have misread.....marko

No... you didn't misread.... but it was one of those thoughts that went through my head.

Fortunately, it didn't find a place to park.

The NOS is mine to keep. I plan to hang onto that, and one nice WFL Speed King rebuild.

And a few others
