Ludwig 80's Duo Modular? Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Can anybody help with info on these Ludwigs? They are for sale here in NZ for $600 & owner says they are in good condition apart from minor & cosmetic stuff, hasn't got anybody interested except me yet though & I really like em! I am not too knowledgable & can't find much info on them, I've always wanted an older Ludwig kit to restore & think they are a good buy. Can't understand why he is having trouble selling them! Are they the Ludwig kit to avoid at all costs or something? Owner says they sound really really phat & he loves em but too bulky & heavy to be carting around anymore. Anybody got any input before I dive in & buy them? Thanks, Nigel.

LUDWIG DUO MODULAR

Shells only and hi hat stand, no snare!

Sizes 13x12, 14x13, 16x16, 22x16, six ply maple with white cortex finish.

I have that kit in the larger option--24" kick and 18" floor tom. I bought them to resell and instead they've become my main kit, displacing my beloved Slingerlands. What's particularly nice about them is how impervious that Cortex is. Mine shined up like new.

I tend to play my drums low and didn't like the deep tom sizes when I got the kit. But man do they sound good! What I've wound up doing is putting the 13" on a stand and mounting the 14" like a floor tom between the actual floor tom and kick drum. I'll attach a pic to show you.

I'm planning to put a cymbal L-arm mount on the kick drum and do away with one of the cymbal stands. If I didn't hate the way the big modular mount looks I'd hang the 13" directly off of a cymbal stand at the front of the kit as well.

I don't know about the price, candidly. While I wish they sold for big money--and think they deserve to--I would put those more in the $300-400 range without a snare.

Thanks for the greeting & extremely quick reply, good to know they are a nice Ludwig (I can't imagine there was ever a bad one!). It's a mystery why he hasn't sold em? I've seen other classic Ludwig kits disappear within days he's had this up for a couple of months now. Sounds great, thinking I might bite the bullet & grab em, will let you know. Regards, Nigel.

Haha, that is exactly what I was thinking of doing with this set, a poor mans Bonzo set up! Can't afford the real thing but tey have that Blue & Olive Green badge, made in the US & sound so PHAAAAAAAT! (apparently)

Stuff definitely goes for a little more here so I'm thinking of offering him $500 which I would be happy with if he accepts.

I'd love to have a kit like that, It's tricky to get a standard kit to sound authentic ''metal'' ;). Hope you get a good deal!

The 6 ply Ludwig's shells are one of the best sounding set's i have..I also like the Modular mounts and stands you can set them up any way you like and make a truly custom set up....Mikey
