there is a gold sparkle 60's Ludwig set on ebay. it says

"This kit was purchased by the original owner, new, as a complete set in 1964. We acquired it from teh original owner."

14x20 Bass

14x14 Floor Tom Serial #76952

8x12 Tom Tom Serial #59747

5x14 Snare

the 2 serial numbers tell me 64, but the no serial number badge says 60-63

is this common?...to have purchased a set "new" and have the serial numbers that far apart?

just curious.

Possibly bought one piece at a time, which often happened with young drummers. The usual order of purchase (snare drum, bass drum, small tom, floor tom) would seem to fit with the serials.

Also possible that a music store put it together from drums that had been in stock for a while, ordering up the other two drums to fill out a set. That would match the purchased all at once as a set aspect of the story.

Or maybe Ludwig shipped it out that way including some shells that had been sitting around in the factory stacks for a while. Tough to know for certain.

The drums were probably made within 30-60 days of each other in late 1963. They probably have date stamps inside. I have a pink oyster set with similar serial numbers.
