Ludwig bonham kit....need advice Last viewed: 3 minutes ago

I have an 80's Zep kit, classic maple, long lug set. Sizes are :

Bass: 26 x 16, one top mount (sets on snare stand) 15", and regular 16 and 18 on floor, 10" snare with 12 lugs. I will attach pictures.

Here's my question: I found an 80's classic maple bass drum 26 x 14 that I'm interested in buying. I took a couple of my drums to see if they matched in regards to color, serial numbers, and correct keystone badge.

Of course the serial numbers didn't match perfectly but were surprisingly very close in batch numbers. His bass drum matched my stuff perfectly. I think I'm going to buy this drum and set up some kind of double bass kit. It's in excellent condition and he wants $400. I think it is a good deal based on what I've seen on ebay.

I have some issues with this idea. My 15" tom has no mounting brackets. I saw one double bass kit on ebay, same sizes and the 15 was just set in the middle of the bass drums. It looked cool but it didn't look like it would be very easy to play because of reach. I checked into using a rim mount set-up for the 15 and it was over $200.00 just to get the 15 mounted to a cymbal stand. The drum guy also told me he didn't recommend mounting a 15" x 14" because of weight.

Here's my question. If you guys were setting up this kit, what would you do with the fifteen? I thought about using it as a floor tom on my left and try and find a 10/12 or 12/14 top mount toms on stand to complete the kit. The problem there is finding two *80's long lug maple classic drums for sale. Also, would it bother you if one bass drum is 16" deep and the other is 14"? they both are 26"......I don't think it will matter much. Thanks!

I would use the snare stand and mount it in between the two bass drums

You need to sit real high.

Custom Throne at 48"-60", Leg extensions like drywall guys use.:D

That is a big kit. It "is" Deep.

Beautiful set man.

Tom on snare stand betwixt the giant bass drums.

I would agree that you will need the tom on a snare stand between the kicks. You will have to learn to play with the mounted tom quite a bit higher. Another option would be using a remote pedal for one or both kicks to be able to spread them out, something like what Abraham Laboriel Jr. is doing now.

Thanks fellows!! Looks like the ol' 15 has to go in between the bass drums. That's gonna be a ***** to play because it will be so damn high and you can only angle the tom so far down. Anyone on here have this set-up that we can look at: (2) 26 bass drums, 15" in middle on a snare stand and regular 16/18 on floor? I'd love to see that. There was some drummer in the 80's with this set-up. I think it was the drummer for White Lion...Fred Coury? Thanks. Oh....I just thought of something close that was bad ass! Cozy Powell's "hammer" kit. Same sizes but he had two toms up top. I think I have a picture of my future set-up in a Ludwig catalog. Pictures coming soon.

your problem is the power tom 15x14" you can take a snare stand and cut down the tube length on the base remove the legs to the base and reattach them. if you follow me on this suggestion?

Never thought of that....thanks! Here's a picture of none other....the KING...Bonzo with this set-up. I understand that he didn't use the double bass kit for long. I think Page and Plant didn't like it for some reason.
