Ludwig Carioca kit for sale Last viewed: 11 hours ago

I have finally decided to sell the Ludwig Carioca kit I have owned since 1968. I drooled over this kit in the window of the music store where I took lessons when I was 14 years old. I was in heaven when my folks bought it for me, and I've taken good care of them ever since. But now, I haven't played in years and my wife and I want to move to a smaller place, so it's time to sell. I'd like someone who appreciates vintage drums to put them to good use.

Date stamps and serial numbers confirm that this kit was made in 1968, the year I got them. (My research shows that Ludwig made the Carioca for several years before they showed up in the catalog in 1971.) The snare is the only piece not original to the kit, since I already had it. It's a 1966 Ludwig Acrolite. Someone initialed the inside of the snare shell - a restorer told me the initials are William Ludwig's. I believe that's very possible, but I can't confirm that for certain. Maybe tomorrow night I'll take a picture and post it and someone here can tell me.

The cymbals that I will sell with the rest are Zildjians - a 22" ride, an 18" sizzle and 14" high hats. I also have a fiber case for the snare and vinyl cases for the other drums.

All the drums are in very good shape; no dents or chrome pitting, only one very small gap in the vinyl wrap on the floor tom.

I really don't know what value to put on this set. I would entertain offers, or I would like to hear suggestions from some of the knowledgable people on this forum. Here are some pictures:

Hey Ronbob...I'm not in a position to make you an offer right now, nor can I help you value this kit, but WOW...what an awesome kit! I play lots of root rock, rockabilly and Cumbia music (we call it Cumbiabilly!) and I have often thought of how *****in' it would be to own a Carioca set like this! I never thought I would actually see one for sale...especially as original as this one. I'm very sad that it's not a good time for me to buy another kit. I wish you the best of luck on your sale and want you to know that you have one awesome (and probably pretty damn rare) kit right there, my friend.

Wow. GREAT kit!

You didn't happen to graduate SHHS near Topeka, Ks in 1971?

A friend of mine had a kit just like yours -- even down to the folding spurs. And he was also the type that kept it (and would have always kept it) in great condition. I loved the chrome timbales / black panther wrap combo, always thought it was cool!

If they were in my "stock," just the drums alone I wouldn't start anywhere under $1500 on eBay. Avedis Zildjians? If so, and if the hardware & cases are also in excellent shape, I agree with Mikey's $3000 + figure. Just MHO...

Thanks for the comments, guys. I think I'll leave this thread here for awhile to see if anyone is interested in making an offer before I advertise anywhere else.

I'm not the friend from Topeka, billnvick - I'm in Ohio.

Below is a picture of the initials inside my snare. I'm curious to know if these are actually W. Ludwig's initials:

Oops - that didn't work. Not sure what I did wrong, but I'll try that again.

OK, I think I got it this time. This is a picture of the initials inside my snare. Any thoughts?

I'm not a handwriting expert so I can't offer comment on the initials. I am in agreement with the others about value. That kit is worth every bit of $3000. if not more.

Best of luck with your sale. I hope you find a good home for those.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

I recall seeing Corky Laing with Mountain playing a double bass "Carioca" kit in 1971.

Bringing this thread back into play.....

I still have the Ludwig Carioca kit I described in this thread 2 years ago. I just haven't been in a hurry to sell, but now I am ready to put it back on the market. Anyone interested?
