Ludwig Classic P-87 Strainer Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Hi guys. I've just purchased a Ludwig Classic P-87 Snare strainer throw off as a replacement for a WFL P-83 that snapped. I know the Ludwig Classic strainer is not original to the WFL mahogany snares, but will it work?

I am wondering if the spacing between the holes is the same on these P-87 strainers as it is on the P-83 and also what is the exact snare wires I need to get to make this work? I heard Puresound wires, but there are like a gazillion different varieties. I'm using the original WFL butt plate and I've no idea how I can get this strainer up and running, because I don't know what wires I need. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The P-87 strainer is a whole different beast compared to the P-83. The P-87 has a different hole spacing, also requiring an additional 3rd hole. That, plus the P-87 uses a non-standard set of wires, which have become tough to find. My suggestion? Just obtain a new P-85, or vintage P-83 if so inclined, and mount it to the existing holes. The newer P-85 can be used with either string or strap.

+1 with what Mark stated.

And please don't drill extra holes. The P-85 is a suitable replacement.

Thanks Mark, too bad I already bought the P-87. Oh well!

I certainly won't be drilling any extra holes in the drum, so I may just sell the P-87 or keep it until I have use for it.

Thanks.

you can also buy a brand new p86 millennium strainer. they are nice and have a great vintage vibe. will be cheaper than a p83 unless you find a nice deal. same hole pattern as p83 and p85.

I wanted to get something that looked like it belongs on a WFL snare drum. I was thinking about Buddy's WFL Super Classic with the p-87, but that was a WFL p-87. The one I've ordered is the Ludwig P-87. I assumed they're the same, more or less.

Just to clarify because I didn't mention earlier. The P-83 that snapped on this WFL snare was actually the WFL p-83 and not the Ludwig P-83. IS there a difference? I could just measure them because I have both kinds here, but they're all the way over there and they're in a case and there are drums on top of the case. Fine! I'll go measure them! And another thing, the seller of the p-87 has stated that the hole spacing is 1-3/8". I'm going to get the tape measure out to double check. It's not that I don't trust you guys. You were right when I wasted my cash on those clanger cymbals, so I'm guessing you're right about this p-87 doohickey too.

You guys were right! Not that I ever doubted you for a second. The spacing for the holes on the P-83 is around 2 and a quarter inches. I just measured.

I'm going to hang onto the p-87. Now I have a good excuse to buy a new shell. :D
