Ludwig Club Date question Last viewed: 3 hours ago

I may have asked this before but I do not recall getting a response. What is the difference between say a 69 Club Date kit and a 69 Super Classic other than the center lugs?

A lot ...

Club Date had disappearing spurs - Super Classic had gulls

Club Date had 12 and 14 toms - Super Classic had 13 and 16 toms

Club Date had 20 inch bass - Super Classic had 22 inch bass

Club Date had snare stand and bass mount cymbal holder - Super Classic had snare stand, bass mount cymbal holder, AND hi-hat stand and cymbal stand

The shells are the same.

The T-handles on the bass drums on Club Date kits are the older, "Bow-tie" type.

The bass drum will have disappearing spurs instead of the folding (used up to early 69?) or curved spurs.

The rail mount will be on the very top of the BD on the Club Date, and at about 11:00 (from the player's perspective) on the Super Classic.

I'm not sure if all of the finishes were available on the Club Dates...

I think that just about covers it...

Ooops... I see RogerSling has covered most of it first.

On the shells, I was referring to the construction and not the sizes...

Sometimes the shells are the same (given the size.. The Club Dates are usually the same size as a Downbeat model set. There are 6 lugs on the 14" floor tom and as mentioned they are central lugs instead of classic lugs. So the club date sets are a good value from a performance standpoint because of the shell similarity.

Another difference is the mufflers on some of the club dates I've found are smaller knob internal mufflers with round pads inside, whereas the classic models may have a bat muffler. This is for 68' and before though because they brought in the round mufflers in 68-69 I think. Someone should create a comparison chart.
