Ludwig COB Universal? Last viewed: 22 hours ago

I just picked up this drum. I was told it is from the 20's but I cannot locate any sort of date stamp on this drum. It has no flange hoops with brass clips.

The tension rods on the batter side i think are all original, although one seems a bit different, but seems to be from the same era.

The bottom tension rods are chromed so are from somewhere else.

I was told that this strainer was original, but i cannot find out online if it really is. I looks to be stock. The strainer has very little throw. The strainer and butt plate were both replaced with newer chromed ludwig hardware at some point, so the shell has a bunch of holes in it.

I'll be needing some new snare wires for this drum. Should I use the newer strainer that I got that will be able to take a strap or string?

Looks like these old strainers are designed to take some other type, although i could tie some string and it would probably work alright.

I thinking of getting the GROVER PRO PERCUSSION wires, that are closer to what this drum might have had originally, rather than the spiral wire type.

One of the lugs has been replaced by a modern chromed lug, as one of the original brass ones tore out while the drum was being tuned. I mean the tension rod tore out of the lug, and stripped out the threads.

Any information about this drum?

It is the 14x4 model.

I have no problems with heads fitting on the drum itself, all heads seem to fit nicely, but I'm having issues with the hoop. The hoop seems too small, so that it doesnt rest on the flesh hoop of the head, rather it pushes down on the actual collar of the head, at least it does with Remo stuff.

Any suggestions for some heads that might sound great on this drum, and might fit better with the hoop problem? Originally I really wanted to put on a Coated Vintage Ambassador with a Diplomat Snare side. I thought that would be sweet.

So it is really hard to get even tension on the head, as the hoop never will sit level on the head.

Here are some pictures.

HERE THE CLIP IS NOT EVEN ENGAGING THE HOOP AT ALL. THE CLIP IS ACTUALLY PUSHING DOWN ON THE FLESH HOOP OF THE HEAD.

The throwoff is a '40s Ludwig.

It looks like the clip in question is close to the snare bed, which usually gets cranked down the hardest, and from the pic the clip, where it curls over the rim looks to be pulled out or damaged/mis shapen, maybe try a different clip there and see if it clears the heads collar,or take a look to see if the rim is extrememly mis shaped,I have a worl max brass stick shopper and it likes to bend out of shapes,I have to be care full when changing heads to make sure it is flush and true.

My suggestion is to replace the clips with modern versions, if you're going to use this as a player. The old brass clips don't hold up well under higher tensions. I learned this the hard way years ago. Drumfactorydirect.com has replacements.
