Does anyone know if Ludwig was date-stamping its shells in 1970?

Yes they did stamp some....in RED ink. I don't have one to show, but I had a red sparkle tom tom that was from 1970 stamped with red ink. However, having stated that, I also have several very early 70's shells with no stamps.
