Ludwig Dating Questions Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Hey Guys;

I'm a new member, and this is my second thread. Appreciate the help you've given with my shipping questions, have a couple of non-related, dating questions. Bought a sky blue pearl Ludwig Downbeat kit a few years back. The toms are both 60s, but the kick has the newer, b/o badge and arched claws. Assumed it was 70's, but just checked the dating chart and I'm now thinking it might be '69. Badge #754865 - any insight out there? Also have a Supraphonic which I believe is COB. Keystone badge has no serial #, and I can't seem to find any stamp inside. Been keen to know it's date and value. It's in great shape - picked it up at a yard sale a few years back, along with an old WFL kit and a Zildjian ride and 13" h-hat cymbals... $25, (SCORE!).

Some genius painted both toms black on the inside, but keystone badge #s indicate 65, or 66 if I recall. Kick drum seems to be clear lacquer over wood.

Pictures of kick, or snare, (or both)? Have to get back to you with pics, working at the moment. Also, pictures of what particular details?

Daddy....that's a nice-looking kit! Get yourself some vintage stands to go with it--that giant double-braced stuff is overkill. Those cymbals just need some nice flat-based stands to hold 'em up. I've got an extra vintage hihat somewhere, I'm sure. Benjamin Moore's got a interior paint that matches the original Ludwig paint real close......masrko

Yes, that bass would be '69. Very early B/O badge. It should have clear interior, and the toms should both be white. On the snare, if there is no pitting and the chrome looks very deep, there's a good chance it's brass. You can also try removing a lug and look at the inside edges of the holes. Also, look for a welded seam. Sometimes it's hard to see but there should be a little discoloration inside the shell, or you may be able to see a spot weld. If it's welded, it's brass.

@ marko52, I hear you man. Was just trying it out. Hardware from my Pearl BLX kit. Have some bits and pieces of period hardware, (will work on that) but when I was playing the kit for a 60s tribute band, I picked up a couple of nice, light DW retros that were great. Got those loaned at the moment.

@ t.c., Just taking snare apart to detail. checked on I.D. list and seems to fit criteria - still to try lug hole scrape test, or magnet, but I'll look for welds as well. Real question is how to accurately date?
