I have a 70s/80s Ludwig Bass Drum with the double sets of spurs. From what I have found there are two different sizes of spurs. A 5/16 and a 1/2. How can I tell what size would fit my bass drum? Does it matter?
Ludwig Double Spurs Sizes Last viewed: 6 hours ago
What size is on there now?Usually the 3 ply shells used the 5/16" and the later 76 6 ply shells used the 1/2 " spurs.Just measure the size of the spur itself.
Some have said they swapped out he 5/16 for the 1/2 without having to redrill the spur holes, since there was ony a 3/16" difference in size.

If it's a double set of spurs, I would bet it's the thicker 1/2" type. I don't think Ludwig was doing the double sets of spurs much with the 5/16"s. I've had a 3ply 22" with a double set of 5/16"s, but would suspect it was a custom shop order. By the 80's, I believe Ludwig had fully moved over to using the 1/2" spur exclusively.
Hi. I have a few kits like this. As stated by others the double spurs on the 6-ply kits is the larger 1/2" thick type. None of my 70's 3-ply kits have double spurs, and the singles are all thinner type.
