Im a drummer too!

Heck of a nice barn find. Pointy b/o badges were introduced in around mid 1969 with six digit numbers and continued thru 1970. In 1971 they issued pointy badges with no serial numbers, then mid 1971 and 1972 the numbers were used again. The pointy badge was used to at least 1979. Other guys can date the drums by serial numbers and give you a better idea of when they were made. Im no expert, just reading this from the Rob Cook book.

The wrap looks to be a maple cortex finish, hard to count the plys from the picture. Your floor tom looks to be MIJ or something, lugs look like Slingerland but the Japan companies made a lot of copies of those. Is that black paint inside of that drum? But the bass and small toms are definitely Ludwig and should clean up real nice, congrats on a great find!

Thank you!

By the way, you lucky that all of the hoops are present on the Luddys. So many drums are found with the reso side hoops missing.

Thank you!

Thanks, found these yesterday, still finding out about them. I did notice the serial numbers are 7 numbers they start with 115, or 116, I did check the inside of the toms, painted with ( Ludcote ? grey looking ), the floor tom, different wrap, black inside,no badge. I am lost with this one.I know it is made by Ludwig, but that all I know.

Thanks for your advise, Bucky

If they have reinforcement rings in the shell, they are 3 ply. If they don't, they are most likely 6 ply.

Rob Cook was working with limited data at the time, so his serial number dating guide is not particularly precise, especially for the Blue/Olive badge drums and the 1970s. While there were some Blue/Olive badges without serial numbers in 1969/70/71, we should resist saying that all of them were. The largest concentration of badges without serial numbers in the database I have constructed is 1970. Even so, about three-fourths of the over two hundred drums I have recorded with 1970 date stamps have serial numbers, while only about one-quarter do not. For drums with 1971 date stamps, it appears that badges without serial numbers tend to be those which have the lower portion of the badge trimmed off to fit on metal snares with shells with center beads.

From what I have been able to determine, seven digit serial numbers starting with 115 and 116 would have likely been used in the 1973/1974 time period. Drums from this period would be expected to be three ply with reinforcing rings. Interior finish would be expected to be clear lacquer or LUD-COTE.

Collecting information about the following for ongoing research projects:
Gretsch drums with serial numbers,
Ludwig Keystone and B/O badge drums with serial numbers and date stamps,
Ludwig Standards from 1968-73, and
Ludwigs with paper labels from 1971-72

Thanks,

That cleared up some things. The bass has reinforcement ring, clear lacquer inside, serial number #1156495.

The two toms, 8 x 12, 9 x 13, has reinforcement rings, but is painted grey,Lud -Coat, serial # 116 7 digit numbers.

So, I suppose, these are 73 - 74 year. With maple cortex wrap. Not sure about the model, though.

Now the last piece of the puzzle, the 16 16 floor tom. it looks like it has, a yellow type wrap, it is also reinforced, but painted black or really dark grey over wood. it has no badge,so there is no way to date this. (pics earlier thread ). I want to thank you all for your time and expertise

Looks like you have either a Hollywood or a Big Beat set but missing the original floor tom. Both sets were the same drums (as were all wood sets) but the Big Beat came with Atlas Hardware and the Hollywood came with the flat based hardware.
