If you buy it, it's your drum and you can do a whatever you want. I personally wouldn't drill it, and I suspect from your comment it appears you're not 100% confident drilling would be a good idea. Not sure of the size of the drum, but if it's a 14x22 Superclassic, there were many WFL and '60s Ludwigs sets made in white marine pearl with a rail mount and cymbal stand bracket, not to mention drilled spurs, either telescoping it folding. If it were me, I would probably keep looking until I found what I wanted, which in my case ended up being a 1961/1962 3 piece Ludwig Superclassic 13/16/22 set in WMP.. But then, you're not me.

It's actually a 24x14 and I was hoping for a champagne sparkle, but this opportunity came about rather unexpectedly. The size is the real selling point for me. I've encountered very few, and they've all had a central tom mount except this one.

I wouldn't plan on selling the drum, so any modifications I made wouldn't be someone else's problem down the road. And if I did part with it I can't imagine it'd be to make a profit, so a hit to the wallet wouldn't be a factor. I'd simply pass it on to another drummer who could appreciate it.

All that said, the reason I'd be hesitant to modify it is because it's a small piece of drum history. It's lasted for 50 years in its current state and I wonder if that shouldn't be preserved, even if it isn't exactly what I want.

Anyway, I guess I'm just thinking out loud here haha

I hear ya on that! I'm pretty brave about this stuff generally, or reckless, depending on your POV, but I'd hesitate to drill a virgin kick drum. OTOH if you do a good job installing a period-correct mount......it's bit of a tough call...

I'm trying to put myself on the other side of it. If I saw someone buy a 24" champagne sparkle with a rail consolette and they installed a central bass mount I'd have a heart attack.

That would be my thinking as well.

I would never ever drill a virgin bass drum. They are rare enough from that time period. Use a snare stand for the up tom, or rims to mount your tom in a variety of ways. I agree with Mike. That mount looks foreign to me.

Exactly what drums are with the set ? A snare ? And description. I am also wondering if that mount or whatever it is was put there to fill the holes left by the old type L rod cymbal mounts.

No other drums are with the set. It's just a single item the seller has. I think you're on to something with the cymbal mount. It looks like it could fit a Radio King-style cymbal mount... I think?

I've also decided against drilling or even buying the drum. I figure I don't wanna be broke if my dream kick should come along in a couple weeks, and since there's a buyer for this drum somewhere in the world, I'd rather let that person find it than ruin it before they ever get the chance.

By the way, Vibes, I recognize your name from another site. You have a champagne sparkle Ludwig in big sizes, don't you?

Yes, I have a 68 Champagne Sparkle set 24" virgin, 18" floor 16" floor, 14" floor, two 13" and a jazz fest snare. I really like them and fortunate to have found them.

How exactly did you find them? I'm looking practically the same exact kit at the moment, except with a non-virgin kick and B/O badges. I have 13, 14 and 15" tons in the mail to me right now. Your success is giving me hope haha!
