Ludwig Lacquer B/O Badge Ludwig C-List Find - Is the finish original? Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Hello. I scored a good find on C-List (ending my drought). They are Ludwig with clear interiors in 12, 16 & 20 inch sizes but the finish is a Mahogany lacquer. A bit sloppy with the finish splashing a bit into the interiors. All badge #'s are somewhat close (12"-811933). Looking through my Ludwig '67 and '71 catalogs I see no lacquer as being an optional finish. Strangely enough I did see a B/O Ludwig marching tom on ebay today with a similar finish. Is this a factory finish? If so, the sizes do not coordinate with any of the model kits as seen in the catalogs of the era.

Nice find. Clear Lacquer Mahogany is listed in the '67 Ludwig catalog and is the finish on the Jazzette Kit that is shown in that catalog. Yours were probably special ordered sizes most likely.

Thanks Mike! Just looked again. I thought that was red sparkle on the Jazzette. I mainly looked at the back for finishes. I wonder why they didn't list the lacquer finishes that were available?

$100 with newer stands, a 20" ride and 14" hats (A. Zildjian).

The finish is very bad at this point.

It doesn't look like the badges and grommets were removed. Have you taken off a lug to check? There are no inlays in the hoops. I'll bet they sing, factory finish or not :)

The way the badges and grommets looked made me think it was a factory finish. Not a smidgeon of lacquer on the badges.

The only altered issue is that the spur holes were widened to accept the 1/2" spurs. No rail was included. I am surprised this kit did not get the old "let's drill for a double mount" treatment.

Not sure whether to re-lacquer or wrap these.

I don't think the lacquers are mentioned because there were so many of them. PLus, they would also do special order lacquer colors as well. Here is a pic of Bill Maley's 67 Mahogany Jazzette kit for comparison.

Wish this finish still looked that good!
