I think the drums are worth close to that. If he works with you on the price and they have the sound you're after, you've got my blessing to buy it. ;)

I think $300 would be a GREAT deal for that set. It has a supraphonic snare, there are the great Ludwig drums and one Pearl drum. I'm not sure what the deal is here, is it a firm price or would the seller negotiate? Or even add some cymbals to sweeten the deal? If a Slingy player set is worth that much surely a Ludwig one is as well.

A Slingy kit with that many mods and crap condition would not be worth the 450 asking. You can get a sweet kit with no mods in good condition for that ... with a snare. This is my opinion and as always is refutable.

What is the utility value of the drums. That's the question.

See, this is where we pull the tweezers out to split and splice the hairs. I agree with you that 450 is an ok price for a utility kit. But, you could do much better than this in a vintage kit ... and WAY better in a modern kit. But, if vintage is the desire, I honestly believe that a sweet kit can be found for that dough that needs no work and has no mods. I would check out GC and MGR and their ilk prior to dropping dough on this particular kit.

I'm not looking for expensive collectable drum, I'm not a drummer and I'm looking for something to have fun and do some recordings. I don't want something that sound "modern", I want a kit that can do a 60s, 70s type of sound. What should I look to evaluate if it's in good condition ? I thought that if the shell and lugs were not broken that would be ok, but remember, I have to learn everything about drum from the beginning !

That's what he's looking for. The sound of it. Deal looks OK, at least to go and look them over and try to strike a deal. Some people are looking for a good drum set with the vintage tone. I'm all about getting a good deal.

GC might be a good place to look for a used set if he were in a place that had a GC. I dunno about Montreal.

OK I gave my opinion not knowing more info about these particular drums. I think you (CCCC) are looking at a decent deal, it would be a good idea to look at them and see if you want them. $450 is OK, based on the limited info I have, it would be a good idea if you're looking for a player kit to look them over, and decide if you want to make an offer. That is something you will need to do yourself. From the looks of them you wouldn't be totally hosed if you bought them.

Then, I would take an experienced drummer with you to go take a look.

There is a whole range of things that could be very wrong with the set that we just can't see by the pics, and you would not be able to tell us about due to your inexperience.

Just a suggestion...........:)
