Ludwig Mustard Kit Last viewed: 4 minutes ago

Hi all,

I just picked this kit up today from the guy who runs the glass shop where I order my Novus products. As you can see it has been spray painted a bright yellow mustard color. At least whoever did it took the time to remove the hardware. Anyhow, I plan on taking these back down to the bare wood and staining them using Bombay Mahogany which produces a deep red color. The solid hoops on the bass drum will be a laquered natural wood for contrast. Unfortunately the floor tom is not a Ludwig, but Yamaha so I will keep my eye out for a replacement. Here's the rundown:

16x24 bass B/O badge 205xxxx

13x14 rack tom

14x15 rack tom

16x16 floor tom

61/2x14 snare B/O badge 221xxxx

two new Yamaha cymbal stands

Yamaha high hat stand (needs serious cleaning)

Ludwig B/W badge high hat stand

Ludwig bass pedal

Ludwig B/O badge tom mount stand

13'' Sabian AAFusion High hats

16'' Zildjian thin crash made in Canada

20'' Zildjian ZHT ride

Hard fibre case for all the cymbals

As for price, let's just say that it was a deal too good to pass up.

Judging by the serial numbers I would think this kit is early 80's.

Any feedack would be appreciated.

your correct on the year early to mid 80's, these are the 6 ply maple shells this will be a killer rock kit.

The drum sizes suggest mid-to-late '80s.

this looks to be your kit, the Duo Modular, your bass drum tom mount is not a modular mount though? it is the standard mount. but the tom mount arms are modular. also on your badges are they chicago or Monroe NC? http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/ludwig_sets/1982_ludwig_drumsets3.jpg

leedybdp is on the money with his suggestion! Get a 12" or a 13" for a rack tom and use the two current rack toms as floors. Somebody was either nostalgic for Tony Williams or New York City taxi's. The natural wood finish will make the kit look rich.

Thanks for replies guys. VM2000 I was looking through the catalogs and stumbled upon that as well. It is odd that the bass has the standard mount. Also, it has the 15'' tom which isn't in the Duo Modular. I was thinking that it may have been part of a larger kit at one time. Any theories?

Leedybdp & Purdie Shuffle I took your advice and used the free standing tom mount with the 14 & 15 toms. I used a spare 11x12 Ludwig as the rack tom. Much better! Then I thought, hey I have 2 more extra Ludwig toms, let's see. The result is 9x10, 11x12, 12x13, 13x14 and 14x15 toms surrounding that 24'' kick. I know it would be impractical to lug around, but it looks like those toms have found a home. So now I will have 6 drums to refinish. Looks like I found a project for winter.

While not nearly as cool as your kit, I am using nearly square-sized rack toms as floor toms on my Tama Rockstar kit and it works pretty well.

It sounds like you have a win/win with those old orphans and the mustard kit. How do they sound together?
