Ludwig nickel over brass snares Last viewed: 11 minutes ago

Mine is a COB model, 1926 or 1927, 8 lugs, 14x4.

SUPER nice-sounding drum! I have a modern Black Beauty and a Roger's Powertone as well (just sold off my DW brass snare...). All of the "modern" drums have a specific ringy brass sound to them, but to varying degrees. The COB Ludwig I have has a different sound to it entirely. It has the body and complexity of a brass snare, but it's dry and controlled. A different beast, for sure, and DEFINITELY one to add to the collection...

If you're not hung up on the "vintage" aspect... check out AK Drums:

http://www.ak-drums.com/Snaredrums.html

It will essentially have the same manufacturing process as the one you're interested in, and priced pretty well for what you're getting.

On Memorial Day the three surviving members of our 1960’s rock group along with a couple of “younger” players got together to jam. We do this every couple of months. I try to rotate through my snare collection taking a different one each time. This time I took my 1921-22 Ludwig All Metal Separate Tension snare. It has a Remo Weatherking Coated Emperor batter head, a Weatherking Ambassador General Purpose snare side head and 20 wire snares of unknown brand (they’re not marked and came with this drum or off some other one I acquired?). It was originally a NOB; it’s now a COB…the previous owner had it chrome plated back in 1963 and added a baseball bat muffler.

I spent some time the day before tuning the snare, primarily making sure it was in tune with itself (no dissonance when tapping at each lug or top to bottom). Anyway, I guess I hit the tuning right and everything came together, whatever, I was blown away with how absolutely great this brass snare sounded! This is the snare sound I've been wanting and it was right here in my collection, I just needed to get the tuning right! I’m not good at describing sounds, but I would say it has the crack of my Supra, but a deeper tone with less ring…kind of “woody”(?). It’s noticeably louder than my other snares, handles buzz rolls great and just generally sounds clean. Love it…now my favorite snare.

Ludwig Standards are great playing drums. I prefer the 8 lug version over the 10 lug as it is a bit more open sound. Generally 8 lug versions tend to be a bit more desirable than 10. The 6.5x14 is also most desirable followed by the 4x14 and then the 5x14.

Here's a few for you......

Hello.

I am currently considering buying a 4x14" in good condition. How much are these drums worth in USD?

Thanks.
