Ludwig oddity ? Last viewed: 6 hours ago

Hey guys..Just saw this ad on my local classifieds here in Canada called kijiji, of what seems to be an all original butcher block kit from the 70's.. Looks interesting enough seeing as how i enjoy smaller sizes for gigging, but the dimensions don't seem original to me, or am i wrong ?

Also, the spurs look off to me, but the hoops and the finish looks like the real deal..My guess is that this kit may be a make up of odd sizes, like a 15" mounted tom, and possibly a rare 20" floor ?

I have never seen any vintage 70's Ludwig disappearing spurs that far underneath the bass drum like that, and that's why i'm questioning the authenticity of the kit itself.. This looks to be a original butcher block, but maybe made up of orphans accumulated over time..

What do you Ludwig gents think ?? He even states to make him an offer, which may also be an indication of a non original kit..

If i was going to buy it, i was maybe thinking of removing the butcher block wrap and finishing it in a natural wood finish with a satin lacquer.. Then again , i probably won't .. Curiosity is killing this drumming cat !.. LOL !

Looks like a standard "downbeat" sized kit 14x20 bass drum, 14x14 floor tom, and 8x12 mounted tom. Most non drummers don't measure drums correctly (depth x diameter of the bare shell). The spurs do look odd but may be factory. The curved spurs did not really fit on 20" shells that well and so they put them in odd places (I have a Ludwig bass drum of a similar vintage and the factory spurs on that are mounted oddly as well).

My guess is that it is a legit set. That is a standard catalog set-up. There may have been another tom with it originally but then again maybe not as Ludwig dropped the rail mount around that time so you needed to use a center post regardless of having one or two toms.

Not sure if they are 3 ply shells or 6 ply...I'd guess late 70's or early 80's 6 ply construction. The butcher block is sort of a love it or hate it finish (I fall into the latter camp) but those cortex wraps wear like iron. However it is very tough to get off the shells if you're planning a rewrap (although it can be done). Probably best to leave it be as these are popular sizes and those that 'love" that finish might cherish a set like this.

Probably one of these two sets originally....

Thanks for the response guys..

K.O-- i've removed the wrap from my current Ludwig Super classic floor tom, and it was a biaatch to remove !..

Extremely time consuming. You may also be right on the configuration, as it does look like all original, but if you notice the one from the catalog, the spurs are mounted closer to the 2nd lug from the bottom, while the BB is closer to the last 2 bottom lugs... But I think i'm gonna pass on this one, unless he brings it down to a ridiculous price, in which case, hey, why the heck not..? I may even go for it if he would accept $400..

$400 for those sizes would be a pretty good buy if they are in as nice of condition as they look.

The only downer is those spurs which are sure to always raise questions. But Ludwig did a lot of goofy stuff at the factory in that era.

Like I said, I have a 20" Ludwig bass drum with a similar set-up. Apparently if the curved spurs are mounted symmetrically on a 20" bass drum they hit each other inside the drum and can't retract all the way. Ludwig's answer seems to have been to mount them slightly off-kilter from each other.

It's the proper spurs for that era....odd placement though. Also, cutting a floor tom would probably not cut enough away to hide holes for where the legs of the floor tom originally would've been. However we see no holes....I would also say the measurements are probably measured wrong. However, i've seen some pretty odd sizes here and there. I owned a 3ply B/O era 16x14 floor tom. The one thing that makes me think that it's a legit bass drum.....Those maple hoops. Those hoops are way expensive. And of all the projects iv'e ever put hands on (drum or other), my experience is that when people try to save money and do it themselves...they cheap it out too far. In this case, chopping a floor tom and going to the extent to find those hoops which are extremely hard to find anyway is probably very unlikely. Not impossible, but highly unlikely.. If that was a conversion, It would probably have those ****ty import kit metal hoops.

Just my 2 cents.

> those that 'love" that finish

Reminds me of a kitchen. When I look at a drum kit, it shouldn't remind me of chopped onions. Who ever came up with the idea of taking the look of a kitchen cutting board and putting it on a set of drums? Julia Child? Somebody at Delmar was on the brown acid. Party

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Eminentdestiny--Good observation..and you're spot on about the goofy things that Ludwig did in the past..They're chock full of anomalies from the late 60's and early 70's..I think it may have to do with all the customizing that was going on back then with all these rock star drummers. ;) lol !
