Ludwig P-85 Strainer/Throwoff Problem........... Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Loading...

Hello,

I like using the Ludwig P-85 Throwoff on snare projects. It is easy to use and available, and the design hasn't changed in years. I am talking about more modern versions of the P-85 (that hold the straps) in this particular case:

I am sometimes having trouble (on more than one drum) with the strainer getting stuck in the "snares off" position. The lever throws the snares off no problem, but when I go to turn the snares back on, the lever gets stuck and doesn't want to be pulled up, even if the snare tension is not that high. Sometimes I have to loosen the snare tension all the way, and then still have to force it back into the "on" position. Again, I use this strainer on multiple drums and have had this same problem on more than one drum (ie not just the same particular strainer doing this each time).

Has anyone else run across this? Any good solutions? Thanks.

When that happens try pulling up on the adjustment knob with one hand while you you close the lever with the other. I have always had this problem with many P-83's and 85's over the past 50 years.

Slide on the mounting part is worn. Lever is not true to slide and has a problem getting caught. Also if you take the blackface off and take a look at the mount, have seen in the past that one side is bent either inward or outward and not in line with the other...this will also put it in a bind.

I know the exact problem you're talking about on the modern P85's. The older P85's and P83's function a whole lot better. I would just opt for a P86 Millennium strainer...same hole spacing and they never get stuck.

And that is why I replaced all of my P85 and 83 strainers. That and having the ability to use ribbon instead of cords.
