The older wooden "Downbeat" (I think they were called) drums sound AWESOME and are generally big bucks. I restored one for my drum instructor and wanted to buy it after but he wouldn't sell... I did not know there was a metal version, but I'd be interested (dependent on cost) if you end up not wanting it.

As to value, I'm not sure as I thought they were all wood shells (and expensive).

Metal shells can be less expensive; however if they made fewer of them, they might actually be MORE expensive...

Hopefully you get better information from someone else, but that's all I got on it...

Piccolo is 3x14, and downbeat is 4x14...confuses a lot of people. With not being able to get a picture, I would say that anywhere from $150 to $225 depending on condition....pitting can take a lot out of the value quickly!

Ahem. That's 3x13 not 3x14 for the piccolo. People get confused but can be forgiven.

In wood it was a jazz combo. In metal, a piccolo. Somebody asked about actual depth so I measured my 1959 jazz combo a week or so ago and it was 3.5" deep. It seems that the wooden shells were "generous" in depth like the Jazz Festivals were.

For the wooden shells 3x13 have 6 lugs and 4x14 have 8 lugs. Another way to tell them apart if you don't trust people's measurements. There are still too many people who measure including the rims, rather than the bare shell.

I don't track prices of piccolo or jazz combos anymore (too much Paiste work), but I'd say go for it in the range suggested.

As to the question of other rims, there are other manufacturers who produce 13" snare side rims with 6 lugs now and then so there will be some around. But they might not be very common. Are you looking to restore it accurately or will aftermarket ones do?

i know the wooden shell piccolo's and downbeats go for big bucks sometimes

but the one i'm looking at does have a METAL shell and is 3x13

and i can't find any info about the value of it :(

Since then the GFC hit things changed, although some rarer drums didn't have the same price drop as others. Based on the number of Piccolo sales you can see they are (were?) not coming up all that frequently. Once or twice a year. Not as common as the jazz combo.

I can't get the fields formatted nicely here, so ask if anything isn't clear.

Note that the $300 and up are in excellent condition and/or specially interesting (like a keystone badge one which is very rare) and/or sold by Hazelshould (who is a top seller and gets top prices) or similar.

You may end up wanting to restore those rims rather than buy replacements. There is plenty of info around here about getting rust off. But if they are seriously warped, that's another ball game.
