Ludwig Pioneer Options 1960 Last viewed: 12 hours ago

Hi all.

So I got my December 29th 1960 Pioneer 6 lug snare this week.

This has the WFL P-83 throw off(am I correct on that?) & NO muffler at all.

I went to the catologs & also saw nickel plated hardware was an option then. Is this Brass nickel plated or chrome?

A bit confused on that.

The drum has the mahogany finish & is pretty much near mint condition. I have not cleaned it yet.

The badge is also pre serial numbers as well which was from 1960-63 from what the web has told me. Attached are some pics.

Any info on the drum a plus.

Thanks!

Definitely looks like nickel.

They used up the existing stock of WFL P-83s before they moved on to the ones with Ludwig on them.

It may have been ordered without a muffler.

The hardware does look like nickel to me as well. That's abbreviated NOB for Nickel Over Brass. It should have brass hoops under that nickel. Your other snare (other thread) might not have COB. By then they were mostly using COS (yes: Chrome Over Steel).

I have that same drum only with a Sept build date! The rims are nickle plated brass as well as having the WFL strainer and butt plate. All hardware is nickle plated and there is no internal muffler.

Mine has the "transitional" badge, unlike yours.

Mine is in mint condition and the person I bought it from had cleaned it real well before I got it. He had planned to display it in his music room but his plans fell through. His loss, my gain...even if it is/was an entry level snare.

Nice snare with a good sound.

I really got to play it last night with my rock band & it kicked ass! REAL fat sounding. I used it with my country band as well & it works nicely with the brushes.

Attached is a pic of the 1974 Slingerland Avante kit I restored that this 1960Pioneer is matching up with nicely!

The snare has found a beautiful adopted home with that drum kit. Enjoy!
