Ludwig Pioneer snare question.. Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Okay...maybe I didn't find my answer!! LOL! Always ask the experts here first!!!!

Anyway, I purchased a 1960 Ludwig Pioneer 5x14 snare in a mahogany finish. It has the transitional Keystone badge with the blue lettering as well as nickel plated brass rims. It also has a nickel plated strainer and butt plate..both labled WFL.

There is also the date "Sept 21 1960" stamped inside the shell.

However, the snare lacks an internal tone control. In fact, there are no holes in the shell for one!

So my question is, did Ludwig not install tone controls on this snare during that transition period? Or if they did, is it possible this drum is a "fluke" and was missed when drilling?

Thanks for the reply! I saw another thread where someone refurbished a Pioneer snare from the same year and the parts showed an internal muffler.

Any idea as to why this snare has WFL parts? The strainer looks just like the P-38 strainer only it's nickel plated. The lugs appear to be nickel plated also.....is this possible?

It's one of the early transitions period one's from wfl to ludwig and they used up the wfl parts first
