Ludwig question 12/13/16/20 Last viewed: 2 hours ago

What is the name of a Ludwig 12/13/16/20/(snare) setup? I just picked up an early 70s Ludwig kit in a 12/13/16/20 configuration. I looked in the catalogs at Vintage Drum Guide, and haven't seen any catalog kit that gives a name to this set up. I'm wondering if there is one. I've seen plenty of 13/16/20 kits on craigslist, and a couple of 12/13/16/20 ones. It very well could be that this is a cobbled-together kit, but the serial numbers are relatively close and the fade on the sparkle is pretty equal on all the drums, which leads me to believe that it is original and from the factory. Or, a pretty good job at mix-and-matching.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

I don't know the answer to that one. I've got a '71 20/13/16 with a rail mount but no cymbal mount on the bass that also doesn't fit one of the catalog setups. It's most like a Deluxe Classic but I don't think a 20" was standard issue. But the serial numbers are so close that I have to think it was ordered up that way. Maybe that's the case with yours as well. Sounds like a nice one.

Maybe they are just kits that were ordered that way by the original owner. Back in the 60's/70's you could walk into a place Like Manny's Music in New York and order a kit in exactly the sizes you wanted. Custom mods were no problem. I think that's what accounts for the kits that don't appear in any catalogs but share very close serial numbers. Just a guess, but it makes sense to me.

Too many great drums to list here!

Thanks guys! Yeah, I know there was the custom-ordering option, but I was wondering if there was a specific model name attributed to this configuration. Any "lost" catalogs out there?

Also, I noticed that the Hollywood configuration started out as a 12/12/16/22, and later changed to a 12/13/16/22, which is the same as the Big Beat. What's up with THAT?!?!?!?

they change the drum size to be more versatile and the name change due to a new generation of drummers the old rat pac era was gone and missed by most here im sure, a more laid back time not so heavy a lot of brush work the drums were the same till they changed ply's and hardware

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

There was an option to get a 20" instead of the the standard 22" on some of the models. Back then a 20" was $10 cheaper than a 22". Imagine!!

My first Hollywood kit was a '64 12/12/16/20 w/ L400.

Even though my first paycheck in the 60's for a 40 hour week's work was $64.00 before withholding, I would have spent the extra $15 or $20 for chrome rather than nickel when ordering a new kit.
